The image displays a massive volcanic boulder located in the "Devastated Area" of Lassen Volcanic National Park in California. This boulder is known as "Hot Rock," a term highlighting the extreme volcanic heat it once possessed. It was transported to its current location by a massive avalanche triggered by the eruption of Lassen Peak in 1915. The area surrounding the rock was historically destroyed by volcanic mudflows and avalanches during that eruption

Following the May 1915 Lassen Peak eruptions, B.F. Loomis and others found massive, hot dacite lava rocks, including this 300-ton specimen, transported miles from the crater by a hot avalanche. The rock sat in the "Devastated Area" for over 40 hours after ejection, marking the destructive 1915 event.

Sandstone Arch at Moab. Red rock formation carved by thousands of years of wind and erosion, make a natural Arch out of the rock, leaving a bridge between two of the formations. Red sand is smooth beneath.
