Finished this last night. Glad I did, because it’s not very good. It’s about the adventures of a con man in 1950s Europe. I guess he’s supposed to be charming, but he’s just a jerk. He treats women like shit, as does the writer. Too bad. I was hoping to like it. #books #reading #lastbookread

Just finished this murder mystery. It gets a B grade from me. Coxe wrote novels that were pretty standard, neither innovative or experimental in nature. His books would have made solid B-movies. This one is from 1957.

Tis the season for a good horror story and this is a good one. Based on the Bell Witch. Well written and not too scary.

From Chapter 4 ("How to End It All") of this marvellous book about literary biography:

"It matters to us, as Chekhov's readers, whether his last words really were (as we would like them to be), 'It's a long time since I drank champagne.' "

I didn’t like it much. One of those mysteries where people go into great detail about people and events they couldn’t possibly know about, in order to advance the story. At the end everything gets rehashed to explain how it all went down.

I’ve just finished reading Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie and I really enjoyed it! I’ve watched the 1978 adaptation with Peter Ustinov many, many times 😂 and I’ve always wanted to read the book. So it was lovely to finally get around to reading it.

It's been a while, but I didn't stop reading 🤓. I just reduced my social media time. Plus I forgot to take a new book with me today.
A lovely coming-of-age story about finding your people and what really counts in life.

Key points of interest are movies, books, art, my dog, & traveling. I write & I paint. Did a pandemic pivot into tech for the day job (previously worked in non-profit theatre). Most posts from the other place were #lastbookread. My website is in the bio.

Chicago during Prohibition was already a powder keg for criminals and law enforcers, but forces of which nobody has any idea are also heavily involved in @slip-wolf.bsky.social 's mystery sex-and-crime novel "The dry spell".
Ideal for cold autumn days!
