"The beauty that we see in a flower, in a tree, is often an expression of a mathematical fact. The beauty of mathematics, in some sense, supersedes the beauty that we see with our eyes."
Dr. Fern Yvette Hunt, born January 14, 1948, is an American mathematician whose work blends probability, dynamical systems, and applied science into strikingly original insights. Growing up during a transformative era in the United States, she developed an early fascination with patterns, puzzles, and the hidden order beneath everyday phenomena.
In middle school, Mr. Charles Wilson, the advisor of her school's science club and her science teacher, motivated her budding interest in mathematics. Mr. Wilson held a Master's Degree from Columbia University, was also a chemist, and Dr. Hunt was especially inspired by being mentored by a Black teacher fluent in science and mathematics.
Hunt earned her undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr College and later completed a PhD at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, where her curiosity for complex systems fully developed.
Over her career, she has made influential contributions to nonlinear dynamics, fractals, and stochastic processes, often focusing on real world problems such as materials science, internet traffic, and data analysis. At the National Institute of Standards and Technology, she became known for bridging theory and application with admirable elegance and precision.
Beyond research, Dr. Hunt has been a powerful advocate for diversity in mathematics, inspiring generations of students through mentorship, lectures, and outreach, proving that curiosity and determination can reshape both science and society. Her achievements continue to illuminate pathways for interdisciplinary discovery and inclusive excellence worldwide.

"I hear music that comes out of need, out of grief, sorrow, suffering and out of overcoming these things...It's an incremental change, the culmination of many events in your own life and the lives of your children and grandchildren."

Kathleen Battle was born on August 13, 1948 in Portsmouth, Ohio. Originally trained as a music teacher, she was encouraged by conductor Thomas Schippers, who recognized the extraordinary purity and agility of her voice. Her 1977 debut at the Metropolitan Opera launched an international career marked by luminous performances in works by composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Richard Strauss.

Battle’s radiant tone and expressive phrasing made her a favorite of conductor James Levine and audiences worldwide. In the early 1990s, tensions during rehearsals culminated in a dispute with conductor Christian Thielemann over tempo during a production of Der Rosenkavalier. After she walked out of rehearsals and canceled scheduled performances, the Met general manager Joseph Volpe dismissed her in 1994, citing her behavior as "harmful to artistic collaboration."

Despite the public setback, Battle continued performing recitals, spirituals, and concert works worldwide. In a powerful moment of reconciliation, she returned to the Met in 2016 at the invitation of general manager Peter Gelb for the recital of Underground Railroad: A Spiritual Journey, reaffirming her enduring artistry and legacy.

George Washington Carver, born in Diamond, Missouri in 1864, rose from hardship to become a scientist whose curiosity served everyday people. He taught farmers to heal worn soil, turning peanuts, sweet potatoes, and plants into hope, tools, and livelihoods. Carver believed learning was a gift meant to be shared, and his gentle faith guided patient experiments and generous teaching. After his death, the nation paused to honor him. On December 28, 1945, President Harry S. Truman created George Washington Carver Day, affirming his impact and unity. Truman proclaimed, “I do hereby call upon officials of the Government to have the flag at half staff on all government buildings on January 5, 1946, in commemoration of the achievements of George Washington Carver.”

Dr. Marie Maynard Daly, the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry in the United States, made groundbreaking contributions to the field of biochemistry. Born in 1921 in New York, Daly’s love for reading was nurtured by her parents, who valued education deeply despite financial challenges. Her father, a postal worker, and mother, a homemaker, encouraged her intellectual curiosity, helping her develop a passion for science.
Daly attended Queens College, New York, and earned her bachelor's degree in 1942. Her academic journey continued at Columbia University, where she became the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1947. Afterwards, she taught at Howard University (Washington D.C.) for two years. Dr. Daly joined Alfred E. Mirsky, a molecular biologist, once she received a grant from the American Cancer Society to support her postdoctoral research at the Rockefeller Institute in New York, where she studied the metabolism & composition of the cell nucleus.
Her research focused on the relationship between high blood pressure and clogged arteries, vastly advancing our understanding of cardiovascular health.
Daly’s entry into STEM occurred during World War II, a period when the need for scientific research surged. She worked on projects related to nutrition and the impact of enzymes on the digestive process, contributing to the development of better treatments for heart disease.
Daly's achievements paved the way for future generations of women and Black scientists, highlighting her role as a trailblazer in both chemistry and social progress.
