The last episode of #InTheSwarm Season 2 is now available for listening. In this #podcast, Vivek Sridhar and Hemal Naik talk about #lekking in #blackbucks (#antelopes) 😊
The #Lek #Inspectors
Have you ever heard of Blackbucks? Do you know what a 'lek' is? In this episode, we are joined by Dr […]
Figure 4 in Chen et al. (2025): "On the left are shown the posterior distributions of the standardized β estimates of the total GERP load on three sexually selected behavioural traits (top) and three sexually selected ornamental traits (bottom). On the right are shown the posterior distributions of the β estimates of the six sexual traits on AMS. The white circles represent the median posterior estimates, the thick black lines the 80% CIs and the thin black lines the 95% CIs. The significant indirect pathway of the total GERP load on AMS mediated by lek attendance is highlighted in yellow."
New publication: Predicted deleterious mutations reveal the genetic architecture of male reproductive success in a #lekking bird, by @keesvanoers.bsky.social and others. #evolution #genetics #biodiversity

2/5: Fieldseason started in early May when the #ruffs arrived in the coastal meadows of the #BothnianBay. Male ruffs are known for their fascinating #lekking #behavior! A true spectacle! The existence of the different male morphs is unique.
This year we spent long (and cold) nights out to capture #ruffs during peak #lekking. Each one ringed and fitted with a transmitter to help us track their movements and behavior.
Thanks to the team for the effort and stamina it takes to pull this off 💤

Black and white ink illustration of a chicken-like bird. Its eyebrows and water balloon-looking air sacks on both sides of its neck being bright orange and yellow. Text reads: Tympanchus cupido, Greater Prairie Chicken
Greater prairie chickens can display a quite noticeable sexual dimorphism, the males have large, brightly colored air sacks. During mating season they inflate these sacks while coo-ing and moving their feathers alluringly. This is called booming!

Absolutely thrilled that my plan came together and I saw the Welsh Black Grouse Lekking, photos taken from the car. Set off at 1am to get in place for 6am. Last saw them some 10 - 15 years ago. #lekking #blackgrouse #birds
