This black and white holgapan captures one of the iconic marble lion statues, named Fortitude, which guards the entrance of the New York Public Library's Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. The two lions, named Patience and Fortitude by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia during the Great Depression, have become beloved symbols of New York City. They were placed on their pedestals in May 1911, just days before the majestic Beaux-Arts building opened to the public at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street in Manhattan. The lion on the north side, pictured here, is Fortitude, which is lightly dusted with snow.
