Just got back from a few days in New Orleans and snagged 18 lifers. Here’s my list.

The yellow-crowned night heron was incredible. Tanager was a lovely treat, and I’ve wanted to see a shrike ever since I learned they existed.

It was a four-lifer holiday in B.C. Along with the pigeon guillemot, California quail and red crossbill, there were scores of chestnut-backed chickadees all over. All the spirit and pugnacious-ness of other chickadees… plus brown! #LiferPie

An unusual hybrid chickadee - it's the same shape and size as a black-capped, but has rusty flanks, a slightly brown cap and greenish-brown back feathers - an intermediate between the two species.

I have the coolest rarity in my yard! I kept seeing one chickadee at the feeder that looked wrong - not quite black-capped, but not boreal either. I'm pretty sure it's a hybrid!

It's rare, but it can happen and I have both species in my yard. You can see the blend of traits #birds #LiferPie 🌿

A brown-headed nuthatch perched in its usual position - head down - on the side of a long leaf pine tree.

Merlin said the bird making a particular bird call was unlikely, but it kept identifying it and sure enough we found it - and its nest. Not a great photo - it was cloudy and overcast again this morning when we were #hiking - but #LiferPie, a brown-headed nuthatch. 🪶

I adore the Sandia Rosys- I picked all of them up there in one fell swoop within minutes of arrival. Those flocks are chaotic!

LIFER!!! This weekend I lived out a longtime dream, of seeing a northern saw-whet owl and thus knocking the number 1 white whale from my life list – by attending two banding sessions in central Saskatchewan. I saw six owls, and got to hold two (one even pooped on me – blessed!) #birds #LiferPie

A lapland longspur – a small, brown sparrow-like bird, hunts for food among multi-coloured stones and shells on the shore of an unseen lake. The bird blends in very well!

BIRTHDAY LIFER!! I turn 50 in a few hours, and gifted myself this first-ever sighting of a lapland longspur. A few winter plumage birds were mixed with a pack of migrating horned larks, all salvaging among the stony shoreline of Lake Winnipeg. #birds #LiferPie
