Mossy Hills and Braids of White Water

The Little Zigzag River churning around boulders and under fallen trees in the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon. Horizontal color photograph: the narrow river enters from the left side of the frame and flows out th right. Horizontal color photograph: The Little Zigzag River slides under an old bridge as it winds through verdant green woodlands in the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon. The bridge, concrete and steel, half covered In moss, anchors the left side of the image. The river bursts out from beneath it into a winding cascade around one boulder, then over another and then down again and out the right side of the frame. Ferns cluster along the edge of water above the first boulder and tree clutter the air above the bridge and river. A large, mossy tree anchors the upper right edge of the frame.

Around, Over, Around Again, and Under

The Little Zigzag River weaves through a moss covered obstacle course. Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon. Horizontal color photograph: the water rushes in from the left, split by the base of a long, thin, moss-covered log that starts about mod-frame on the left edge and continues across the from diagonally, eventually resting the fallen tree trunk that stretches from the bottom to the top of the frame, and then exiting the frame into the undergrowth on the shore just before the upper right corner. The flow recombines just after that branch lifts above the water level, and surges forward and then up to get over a rocky shelf. There, it's path is blocked by a tight seal between an underwater boulder and the large trunk trunk, so the flow bounces back and splits again in a half moon shape and a quarter moon shape behind that, to go around the boulder and under the trunk. Separately, from the top left, another current races into the scene, seperated by a partially submerged mossy boulder. This current hurls itself over a boulder and then run down at a slight diagonal under the fallen trunk to join the upper split of the main flow. Still split by and underwater boulder, the two streams dash out the right edge of the frame on a slight downward diagonal.

The Little Zigzag River dives over boulders and slips under downed trees as races through the woods in Mount Hood National Forest. Horizontal photography: the river enters the frame from the upper left corner, and exits the lower left quadrant/. You can trace its path by the white rapids. It dives over a small cascade, then threads around boulders and past a tree trunk, before dropping over another small cascade framed by two more downed trees. It then slips under a much larger fallen tree than enters the frame from the bottom of image and lays diagonally across the entire width of the river and onto the bank on the opposite side. Finally, temporarily free of obstruction, the water rushes out the right side of the frame. In the lower portion of the frame, are two logs running parallel to the bottom of the image, that support the tree making a bridge across the river. Along the top of the frame, lush green ferns and other undergrowth surround the trunks of the trees shading the river.
