Mossy Hills and Braids of White Water

The Little Zigzag River churning around boulders and under fallen trees in the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon. Horizontal color photograph: the narrow river enters from the left side of the frame and flows out th right. It wraps around a pair of moss covered boulders that resemble small hills, and slips under a pair of moss covered downed trees. You can track the water's path by the white rapids. The foliage of the bushes and trees on the far back is a vibrant green.

Horizontal color photograph: The Little Zigzag River slides under an old bridge as it winds through verdant green woodlands in the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon. The bridge, concrete and steel, half covered In moss, anchors the left side of the image. The river bursts out from beneath it into a winding cascade around one boulder, then over another and then down again and out the right side of the frame. Ferns cluster along the edge of water above the first boulder and tree clutter the air above the bridge and river. A large, mossy tree anchors the upper right edge of the frame.

Horizontal color photograph: in the foreground, boulders silhouetted against the starry sky and clouds reflected in the still water of Trillium Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest. As the eye moves up through the frame, it follows the reflections of long thin clouds to the reflection of Mount Hood and with a semicircular appearing cloud formation just off to camera left of the peak. The forest along the lake shore marches in from the let and right sides of the image, as do its mirror images in the lake. Lights of disappointed aurora viewers are visible in spots along the shoreline. Bright lights on Mount Hood itself at the tree line mark the spot of the Timberline Lodge. Above it the mountain peak, several thin clouds stream diagonally across the otherwise clear starry sky.

Vertical color photograph. Mount Hood is reflected in the calm waters of Trillium Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon. There is a sunset stained pink cloud to camera left of Mount Hood that parallels the the summit's slope. Above that are several plan contrails zooming upwards on divergent diagonal paths, and then camera right of the stratovolcano's peak are thin, streaks of clouds heading diagonally up from the mountain and out of frame. Along the lower flank of the peak, at camera right, just above the trees, s a pinkish-purple cloud bank. All of this, and the forest along the lakeshore, are reflected in the waters of Trillium Lake in the foreground. The stillness of the water is broken by the wake of a lone Mallard Hen paddling diagonally upwards from left to right across the frame, disrupting the reflection of the leftmost contrail and the big cloud bank. The duck is silhouetted agains the water, and s just about to cross the reflection of the upper most contrail just to the right and a bit below the reflection of the peak of Mount Hood.

The Milky Way Core appears just above the tree-covered slope at the right of the image, about a third of the way up from the bottom, and stretches diagonally across the star-filled sky reaching almost the top of the frame.

Lost Lake and Sunset Light on Mount Hood

Sunset paints Mount Hood red as fishermen ply the waters of Lost Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon. In the foreground, silhouetted evergreens frame the bottom and right side of the lake. In the center of the image is Lost Lake, surrounded by forest. In the center of Lost Lake, well, just to the right of dead center, are fishermen on kayaks. Beyond the lake to the right a small peak rises in shadow, and beyond the that, dominating the upper third of the image, with the summit about a third of the way in from the right, is Mount Hood. The lower slopes are in shadow, but the upper slopes, glaciers and peak are turned redt by the off-screen setting sun as it sinks below the horizon. The sky is a light blue, that transitions to a reddish tone with hints of purple at the horizon.

Around, Over, Around Again, and Under

The Little Zigzag River weaves through a moss covered obstacle course. Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon. Horizontal color photograph: the water rushes in from the left, split by the base of a long, thin, moss-covered log that starts about mod-frame on the left edge and continues across the from diagonally, eventually resting the fallen tree trunk that stretches from the bottom to the top of the frame, and then exiting the frame into the undergrowth on the shore just before the upper right corner. The flow recombines just after that branch lifts above the water level, and surges forward and then up to get over a rocky shelf. There, it's path is blocked by a tight seal between an underwater boulder and the large trunk trunk, so the flow bounces back and splits again in a half moon shape and a quarter moon shape behind that, to go around the boulder and under the trunk. Separately, from the top left, another current races into the scene, seperated by a partially submerged mossy boulder. This current hurls itself over a boulder and then run down at a slight diagonal under the fallen trunk to join the upper split of the main flow. Still split by and underwater boulder, the two streams dash out the right edge of the frame on a slight downward diagonal.

The Little Zigzag River winds through verdant green woodlands in the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon. Horizontal color photograph: the river enters the frame just below top center, coming in from the left as it navigates some cascades and then curving around to run back towards the left of top the frame at a slight angle. Just above and to the left of frame middle it plunges over a final cascade, then widens substantially as it cuts a hard turn towards the right of the frame, where it exits at the lower right corner.

The Little Zigzag River dives over boulders and slips under downed trees as races through the woods in Mount Hood National Forest. Horizontal photography: the river enters the frame from the upper left corner, and exits the lower left quadrant/. You can trace its path by the white rapids. It dives over a small cascade, then threads around boulders and past a tree trunk, before dropping over another small cascade framed by two more downed trees. It then slips under a much larger fallen tree than enters the frame from the bottom of image and lays diagonally across the entire width of the river and onto the bank on the opposite side. Finally, temporarily free of obstruction, the water rushes out the right side of the frame. In the lower portion of the frame, are two logs running parallel to the bottom of the image, that support the tree making a bridge across the river. Along the top of the frame, lush green ferns and other undergrowth surround the trunks of the trees shading the river.

Mount Hood reflected in not-quite-still, misty waters of Trillium Lake shortly after a sunrise that never produced much color. Vertical image, black-and-white-photograph: The bottom third of the image is Trillium lake, whose slightly wind-stirred waters reflect, from bottom, the mostly clouded sky, Mount Hood, and the forest along its shores. Mist drifts along the surface of the lake, and is most visible in the darker reflections of the forest and mountain. The trees of the surrounding evergreen forest line the lake shore, dark and mysterious. Beyond that, the forest rises on the flanks of Mount Hood in two belts before ending in the bare rock and snowy peaks as the stratovolcano rears up above the surround mountains and the tree line. Above Mount Hood, the clouds swirl dramatically, with a long diagonal crack of light that takes the eye from the upper right of the image to just to the left of of peak of Mount Hood.

Little Zigzag Falls, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon.

A short hike through a magical forest leads to this lovely waterfall fed by the melt off Mount Hood's glaciers. Vertical image: white water flows down a steep drop, across a small level area, and then down a short drop before leveling off for good. To either side of the slightly winding creek are lush green forest. The falls are line with moss covered fallen trees and rocks. In the foreground, a set of submerged fallen branches curve up from the bottom, to take the eye to a moss-covered boulder in the lower right of the image that splits the white water into two streams - a large one to the left, and a smaller to the right.
