The Baronne de Crussol Florensac (wife of Henri-Charles-Emmanuel de Crussol-Florensac, lieutenant general of the armies of the King of France) turns to gaze at the viewer over her shoulder. She grasps a musical score (Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Echo et Narcisse, a pastoral opera that premiered in Paris in 1779). Her copy of Gluck’s opera is not the original but rather an arrangement for voice and keyboard, an edition prepared specifically for domestic consumption and a wider appeal for a work from Marie Antoinette's preferred composer. The baroness wears a splendid bright red ensemble with lace peeking out from her three-quarter-length sleeves plus a lace fichu tucked into the bodice extending high enough to keep the back of her neck warm. A luxurious touch to the opulent attire is the black fur lining of the jacket as well as deep black velvet collar. A matching black wide-brimmed chapeau hat with a bold bright red puff on the crown dramatically frames the baroness pale face and curly blond hair for a stunningly lustrous vision of beauty, elegance, and distinction.
