Infographic page. Gorgons he exact parentage of Gorgon-kind is in dispute by scholars. They are alternatively described as the offspring of the ancient sea-gods Phorcys and Ceto, or of a primordial being known as the Gorgon (itself either a child of Typhon and Echidna or a direct offspring of the Earth-goddess Gaia as a living weapon in her war against the Olympians). The known existence of other Gorgons beyond the famous three suggests truth in the idea that there was indeed a primordial Gorgon from which the rest spawned. Of the three famous Gorgons - Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa – only Medusa was born with a human form. The sea god Poseidon raped her in the temple of Athena and the enraged Athena, unable to take out her vengeance on her brutish uncle, cursed Medusa instead by bringing out her Gorgon nature. Medusa fled to be with her sisters on the rocky isle of Sarpedon until the warrior Perseus (with the aid of Athena and some other Olympians) slew her and cut off her head. From her severed neck rose the winged horse Pegasus and the giant Chrysaor – the offspring of Medusa and Poseidon. Medusa's head was carried by Perseus while he flew to Ethiopia, and drops of her blood fell across Northern Africa, giving birth to venomous snakes and Amphisbaenas. A tribe of intelligent Gorgons, humanoid save for snake hair, scaly skin, and the usual petrifying gaze, lived in the Gorgonean plains of Cisthene and were encountered by Amazon hero Harmothoe of Themiscyra sometime in her recorded adventures. What happened to this tribe since is unknown and they haven't been seen in millennia. A colony of bestial Gorgons was encountered by members of the Apex Society in 1935 in Libya. The place where the adventure occurred is believed to be the location of Lake Tritonis, said in some ancient sources to be a home of Gorgons. If so, the lake has greatly dried up since antiquity, as it was little more than a small oasis by the early 20th Century.
