🌍 Malachite kingfisher, juvenile (Corythornis cristatus)

The Malachite kingfisher is a stunning bird with a vibrant blue plumage, accented by a bright orange-red bill and feet. Its most striking feature is the short, light-blue and black crest, which is held flat. These small kingfishers are typically found near water bodies, where they perch on branches, hunting for fish and insects. They are agile flyers and can dive into the water with incredible speed to catch their prey. Five subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Distribution: Widely distributed in Africa south of the Sahara.
