Manuscript page depicting a ladder that forks halfway up, one direction leading up to heaven, the other down to hell. Each rung is labelled with a bodily sense until the ladder forks, with the rungs then labelled with cardinal virtues and vices (leading to heaven and hell respectively).

This #ManuscriptMonday, we're looking at a 12th-century Bestiary.

Legend said whales lured fish into their open mouths with a sweet scent. Only a decade ago, researchers documented whales waiting with open jaws as "trap-feeding"!

For today’s #ManuscriptMonday, we turn further eastwards, to the Mongol Ilkhanate of Persia, to recount the curious story of the Ilkhan Ghazan, who is said to have taken Jerusalem in 1300 and to have contemplated restoring it to the Franks.
