For today's #ManuscriptMonday, we turn to a remarkable encounter depicted in a late fourteenth-century illuminated manuscript preserved at the Bibliothèque municipale in Lyon.

Manuscript page depicting a ladder that forks halfway up, one direction leading up to heaven, the other down to hell. Each rung is labelled with a bodily sense until the ladder forks, with the rungs then labelled with cardinal virtues and vices (leading to heaven and hell respectively).

‘Spiritual’ senses complemented the bodily senses, making both essential to living a righteous life.
