I’ve been wanting this 1866 General Land Office map on the progress of public surveys in Nebraska and Kansas for a while. I finally got it. #mapgeek

#mapsinthewild Idly flipping through tv shows on Netflix tonight and noticed Andreas Cellarius’ “Southern Stellar Hemisphere of Antiquity” from Harmonica Macrocosmica, 1660. An excellent choice for background art!

J has a plate from Macrocosmica, but hers is a 1708 Valk &Schenk edition. #mapgeek

This 1755 Plan De Boston was created by Georges-Louis Le Rouge, based on the 1742 edition of the famous John Bonner map. It was issued in le Rouge’s Recueil des Plans de L’Amerique Septentrionale, an atlas of American town plans issued just before the French and Indian War. #mapgeek

#mapdayfriday Today's maps are three postcards from the 1950s showing the United States through the eyes of Texas. The "golden age" of pictorial maps flourished from the 1920s through the 1950s, and the illustrators' art was more central than the actual cartography. #mapgeek

Matthaus Merian prepared this reduced version of his 1631 map for the German translation of Pierre d'Avity's Les Empires du Monde. It is one of the many derivatives of Jodocus Hondius' map of 1618. If the auction gods favor me, this shall be mine tonight. #mapgeek

John Melish’s map of the United States, 1818. This isn’t the famous 1816 map by John Melish, which Jefferson had at Monticello, but still a landmark map for its time and one of the highlights of my map collection. I never get tired of seeing this map in my living room. #mapgeek

Street map of the town of Gander

Street map of the town of Gander

I love that this is true. My hometown in Newfoundland is called Gander, and the planners made the streets in the shape of a goose's head. Do you see it? #MapGeek
