Hello, Monday!
What's on the #marshallfoundationlibrary agenda today?
A researcher working with the Frank Price collection.
Interviews w/ 2 summer interns.
A researcher working with the William & Elizebeth Friedman collections.
I might meet myself hurrying down the hallway today ...

American involvement in the Vietnam War ended 50 years ago today.
Capt. John N. Flanigan, USMC
MIA Aug. 19, 1969.

Someone once asked me if George Marshall played golf. I know that he watched golf when he resided in Pinehurst, NC, but this is the only kind of golf he played, I think.
#CollectionHighlight at the #MarshallFoundationLibrary
George C. Marshall was a junior, named after his father. Although his father passed in 1909, Marshall still used "jr." for quite a few years. This may be one of the last documents on which he used it.

FTR, the entire U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center aka AHEC is offline.
Must be hell to be a military history researcher right now.
I am still here, and the #MarshallFoundationLibrary is open. The archives have 500+ collections 1910-1960. Also 1,000,000 NARA copies of that time.
Reach out.
This #CollectionsHighlight is an itinerary for a Business Advisory Council meeting attended by the Marshalls at the Homestead in Hot Springs, VA, in 1945. The Marshall had visited there in 1943, & had this photo taken by the balustrade seen in the postcard.

I'm featuring couples from the #MarshallFoundationLibrary archives for #ValentinesDay.
Elizebeth was from a Midwestern Quaker family; William's Russian Jewish family emigrated to the U.S.
So different, but William & Elizebeth had a 50-year love story of support, creativity, humor, & invention.
I'm featuring some couples from the #MarshallFoundationLibrary archives for #ValentinesDay.
I love this photo of George and Katherine Marshall -- a family photo, completely unposed, not romantic.
They had suffered tragedy and then found a great love in each other.
"When conditions are difficult, the command is depressed and everyone seems critical and pessimistic, you must be cheerful and optimistic."
Maj. George Marshall, just after he returned from France, November 5, 1920
#MarshallWisdom from the #MarshallFoundationLibrary
Eh?
I have 500+ collections in the #MarshallFoundationLibrary archive that would refute that idea.
Working on metadata for the Marshall Papers in the #MarshallFoundationLibrary, & came across this document. I translate Spanish & a bit of French, German, & Russian, but not this.
On my own, this document would have no catalog record. I'm grateful for collaborative librarians!

A rainy Friday that will finish off our almost month-old snow. A good day to be #InTheLibrary
If you were at the #MarshallFoundationLibrary today, what would you be researching?
"When conditions are difficult, the command is depressed and everyone seems critical and pessimistic, you must be cheerful and optimistic."
Maj. George C. Marshall to retired Brig. Gen. John Mallory, Nov. 1920.
#MarshallWisdom from the #MarshallFoundationLibrary
Yesterday 214 boxes of the George C. Marshall Papers left the #MarshallFoundationLibrary to be scanned by Backstage Library works, the beginning of a gigantic digitization project that will make the entire Papers collection freely available.
The individual-document metadata will take several years.
It's #PublicDomainDay. U.S. Government photos, like Army Signal Corps, HAVE NO COPYRIGHT & are available from the Library of Congress, National Archives, & libraries (the #MarshallFoundationLibrary catalog: library.marshallfoundation.org/Portal/Defau... ).
DO NOT PAY BIG $.
A friendly librarian PSA.
A #CollectionsHighlight from the #MarshallFoundationLibrary -- a recently digitized photo of Gen. George and Mrs. Katherine Marshall in formal attire to attend a function in Pinehurst, N.C., in January 1950.
Snazzy dressers, they are!
Another semester begins today at VMI, and I'm excited that beginning in February, the #MarshallFoundationLibrary will be open Tuesday evenings until 10 p.m. so that resources will be available #InTheLibrary for college students and faculty from the local campuses.
Busy week at the #MarshallFoundationLibrary. Researchers Helena, Elizabeth, and Malachi use archival records; and volunteers Eryn and Sue work on projects that make items easier to locate.
Tanziha and I try to keep up #InTheLibrary!
It is COLD and snowy at the #MarshallFoundationLibrary, but #InTheLibrary we are warm and cozy and open for research.
What would you like to learn about Gen. George Marshall?
Two sections of the @VMI1839 U.S. Military History to 1919, taught by Dr. Joel Christenson, came to visit the library and learn about some of the #WWI collections #InTheLibrary. This is an album filled with original WWI Army Signal Corps photos.

It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas #AtTheLibrary ... until it's not! Poor Wilbear, he's got his paws over his ears!
(FTR it was a test.)
#MarshallFoundationLibrary
It's beginning to taste a lot like Christmas #InTheLibrary! Love mulled cider.

It's cold outside, but warm #InTheLibrary. An economics class is visiting later to learn about the Marshall Plan -- what better place than at the #MarshallFoundationLibrary?
Lead article in this quarter's Army History magazine is by Dr. M. Ashley Vance, whom I met as a researcher #InTheLibrary; who has spoken at the #MarshallFoundationLibrary; and who now is helping the effort to digitize the George C. Marshall Papers.
So glad to call her a friend.

On our first cold morning at the #MarshallFoundationLibrary, my favorite #MarshallWisdom temper moment:
"Get these blankets and stoves and every other damn thing that's needed out tonight, not tomorrow morning, and not two weeks from now.
