Opening April 12: "Martin Puryear: Nexus" at the #ClevelandMuseumofArt 🏛️
It’s the most comprehensive survey of the American sculptor’s work in nearly 20 years, with 50+ pieces that bridge the gap between biology and abstract form.

I was not expecting to love the #MartinPuryear show as much as I did, but it was absolutely lovely.

Trevor Fairbrother found it remarkable to explore the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's #martinpuryear: Nexus" survey exhibition, then experience a kind of filmic audience with the artist, then return, fired up and enlightened, to the beautiful installation.

The sculpture, created in 2006-07, is made from painted and unpainted pine and is mounted on a found wheelbarrow. The central element is a large, white, mask-like form that is surrounded by a dense, cage-like structure of wooden sticks. The title "C.F.A.O." stands for "Compagnie Française de l'Afrique Occidentale," a French trading company that operated in West Africa.

Martin Puryear's "C.F.A.O." is a sculpture referencing the Compagnie Française de l'Afrique Occidentale, a French trading company with roots in 19th-century West Africa. The piece features an enlarged, white, Fang tribal mask (often associated with Gabon) embedded within a wooden scaffolding, all resting on an old wheelbarrow. This combination of European and African elements, along with the title's historical context, explores themes of colonialism, cultural exchange, and the complex relationship between the two.
