#MichaelBurawoy, Audrey Singer & I nominated the great photographer Sebastião Salgado (who passed away Friday) for the 2010 @asanews.bsky.social ASA Excellence in the Reporting of Social Issues Award. He won. To celebrate, I wrote this analysis @soc-forum.bsky.social

Ten years since this beauty of a book was published - flicking through it the other day, I recalled the heartwarming endorsement from #MichaelBurawoy. Such a generous scholar.
Michael Burawoy’s Marxism for Realists
The work of sociologist Michael Burawoy was a blend of optimism and realism, focusing on labor in the post-independence world. #Sociology #Labor #Realism #Optimism #MichaelBurawoy #SocialScience
Just learned that the great public sociologist #MichaelBurawoy died 2/3/25. I remember hearing him speak. So inspired by his charge to bring sociology out of the ivory tower and into the streets. I literally cried. But I also laughed at his many jokes which were well delivered! Viva #PublicSociology

SUVs kill. So miserable, and we need sociologists like #MichaelBurawoy now more than ever. He'll be greatly missed... not only by sociologists.

Devastated to hear this. #MichaelBurawoy was one of the good ones. 😥

"With all its regressions, at least in the north, it did create a thriving university and an expansive civil society—a legacy now under threat but far from dissolved. From the messianic period sociology inherited aspirations for a better world that holds state and market in check. In this context, therefore, the sociological tradition must not be abandoned but revitalized. It will be a sociology without guarantees, summoning up the courage to contest this latest wave of marketization that threatens to overwhelm not just ourselves but the human race. Weber’s ‘‘polar night of icy darkness and hardness’’ (PV:128) may lie ahead, but that possibility only makes the ongoing commitment to sociology more imperative."
I think today it is appropriate to read this essay by #MichaelBurawoy on #sociology:

Especially this last bit may provide some inspiration in these incipient dark times.
RIP Michael Burawoy
I just found out about this:

I, alongside many others, am taking the time to mourn #MichaelBurawoy today. What a profound loss for sociology and the world
I've just heard about the sudden death of one of the greatest. Without #MichaelBurawoy, we wouldn't have the public and engaged sociology I believe in. This is a hard blow at a time when his courage, intelligence and irreverence, all of which absolutely brilliant, will be sorely missed. RIPower ✊🏽💔
I am shocked to read this. So sad. He will be missed and his work will remain at the core of truly meaningful sociology. #MichaelBurawoy
#MichaelBurawoy left us at a time we most needed his leadership, his energy, his tireless work to understand our world, his example as an extraordinary teacher, his faith in a relevant public sociology, his openness to a global dialogue, his energy against injustice
