The Citizenship Clinic has received its first request to assist an intercountry adoptee currently detained by ICE in Alabama. Their situation stems, in part, from their adoptive parents failure to secure their U.S. citizenship or lawful status-an oversight compounded by the U.S. government's repeated failure to close the loophole in the Child Citizenship Act. We are actively investigating and working to secure legal support. Please consider donating to our legal clinic so we can continue advocating for intercountry adoptees in need. Adoptees United Logo.

"Our country has long recognized that adoption and its proceedings require critical and consequential considerations. Yet even today, the lack of coherence and uniformity in adoption laws and practicies across jurisdictions exposes adoptees to risk and uncertainty due to their legal status. Although the differential legal treatment between adoptive and biological families may never change, state statutes may provide stricter barriers of protection to promote the permanency of adoption and to put the adoptee's interests first. Without adoption policy reform and a changed narrative on adoption, the normalized attitude toward adoption dissolution and the mindset that a child is "returnable" even after finalization may persist." ~Kira Kilsteink taken from "The Forever Family's Legal Loophold: A 50-State Survey on Adoption Dissolution, Cardozo Law Review.
