“Sons of the Neon Night” is pitched as a high-octane yet highly-stylized, police-crime-action-thriller set in a deconstructed and reimagined Hong Kong. It boasts an A-list cast headed by Takeshi Kaneshiro (“House of Flying Daggers”), Tony Leung Ka-fai (“Cold War”), Sean Lau Ching-wan (“Life Without Principle”), Louis Koo (“Warriors of Future”) and Ritchie Jen (“Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In”).
The original music score was composed by Nate Connelly, with the title theme by the late Sakamoto Ryuichi (“The Last Emperor”).
The story begins with a gigantic explosion and Michael-Mann-style gun shooting of an unprecedented scale in a snow-struck Causeway Bay, a downtown district on Hong Kong Island. Upon investigation, it was a diversion that was a prelude to a series of wild actions planned by the heir to a global pharmaceutical conglomerate (portrayed by Kaneshiro), which ends up with his own father, the founder of the family conglomerate and possible drug baron, killed in hospital. A mission to declare a war on drugs is declared but has the result of throwing the world – and the underworld – into chaos.

Toho shared an official statement from KOTAKE CREATE about the upcoming adaptation: “‘Exit 8’ will be made into a live-action movie! I was surprised and grateful because I never expected that the game would be released at the end of November 2023 and then a movie would be announced about a year later. When I heard about the movie, I wondered how they would turn a game without a story into a movie, but I think it has turned out to be an interesting movie without destroying the world view and atmosphere of ‘Exit 8’! I also had the opportunity to visit the filming location, and it was really amazing to see the underground passage and the old man right in front of me! I hope you will look forward to it! I am also looking forward to the release!”
'Exit 8' follows “A man trapped in an endless sterile subway passageway on a frustrating mission to get out.” The video game’s synopsis gives only slightly more details: “You are trapped in an endless underground passageway. Observe your surroundings carefully to reach ‘The Exit 8’. Don’t overlook any anomalies. If you find anomalies, turn back immediately. If you don’t find anomalies, do not turn back. To go out from Exit 8.”
Genki Kawamura (producer on Hirokazu Kore-eda's 'Monster' and Makoto Shinkai's 'Your Name') is set to write and direct the “labyrinthine horror” said to have undertones of Alice in Wonderland and Squid Game.
