I’m curious for folks that were wearing fitness tracking devices, what were the #mlanet24 days like for you? I didn’t have my Apple Watch on but I feel like even though I wasn’t in my regular routine, I was very active.
I have yet to find one that didn't have at least slides uploaded. You have to click into each session/sub-session and scroll to the bottom to find them, though. It's tedious. #mlanet24
I hope all #mlanet24 attendees (in-person or virtual) on Bluesky got some use out of the feed 🙂 I will leave it live for a few weeks in case others still want to view and reference all tagged posts. Thanks for a great conference #medlibs!
Not gonna lie, the virtual conference interface left a lot to be desired for #MLAnet24. I'm keeping tabs of what I will check out in the next few weeks. If I don't see uploaded slides/recording of interesting works I will be emailing the authors 🤓
#medlibs and #mlanet24. there is a medlibs discord linked here if you’re interested in joining. The link will be active for the next 24 hours - discord.gg/VnEfx6kp
Abbreviation mapping is too noisy and inaccurate, essentially. I’ll also add, in PubMed you need at least four characters for truncation to work. Many abbreviations are three characters or less #mlanet24
@edsperr.bsky.social giving a great talk on the problems with abbreviations in PubMed. Love the description of medical professionals using abbreviations for jargon and terminology as a “coping strategy.” #mlanet24
wild and gross. which #mlanet24 session was this from?
Huzzah! My #MLAnet24 mole has informed me this upcoming session will cover the update and more: www.nnlm.gov/training/cla...
I have a mole in the #MLAnet24 PubMed update texting me tidbits... REALLY wish it was livestreamed for us virtual attendees! It's only a tool we use daily... 😮💨

#mlanet24 - PubMed will be adding wildcard searching capability in the middle of phrases. Now more up to par with other more advanced biomedical databases
From American heritage dictionary: podium, noun, 2nd meaning “a stand for holding the notes of a public speaker”
From Oxford English Dictionary, podium definition I.2.a. “[in addition to being a raised platform, which the subject was also standing upon fwiw] in extended use (North American): a lectern.”
Hi and thanks for your concern! One definition of “podium” is to be synonymous with “lectern.” While this was almost certainly a change precipitated by misuse, it is now an understood and acceptable use of the word. Hope this saves you some time in the future! #mlanet24
Love the CADTH RCT CCT filter via Glymour #mlanet24
RTI virtual poster session, a crowded conference room with two on a stage (Emily Vardell, seated, and T. Brandon Hall, standing at a podium) next to the virtual poster.
MDs have traditionally been the arbiters of what illness and healthcare looks like. Who and what is represented is controlled by a narrow subset of the whole. Where have I heard that before? Awesome poster by RTI student fellow T. Brandon Hall on collection diversity in graphic medicine! #mlanet24
I would like to see #UX and #accessibility principles implemented with poster and slide design. I haven’t been able to read most of this stuff. #mlanet24
Portland OR is almost a proper Boolean search strategy. #mlanet24
Did I hear “quantum” ??? 😮 will love to hear her thoughts on the topic. #mlanet24
BREAKING: Algorithms of Oppression children’s book series proposed! 😍 #mlanet24 No time too early to raise the topic.
“We as a profession cannot be seduced by [AI and its pattern matching, etc]” - Dr. Safiya Noble #mlanet24
Anthropomorphized interfaces: “[people] think thinking is happening…we as a field cannot be seduced by that.” #mlanet24 Thank you @safiyanoble.bsky.social ❤️
“Change your name to Doctor in your medical record.” 🔥🔥🔥 #mlanet24
“These are organizing issues. One practitioner can’t turn off Epic.” #mlanet24 Organize. Intervene.
When I was still in library school I had the amazing fortune to attend ALA midwinter in Denver. At the “Should Libraries Be Neutral?” talk (good example of Betteridge’s law btw), Algorithms of Oppression came up and fully radicalized half the attendees. m.youtube.com/watch?v=eRdU... #mlanet24
I am so happy she immediately came out with critique of biases in GPT algorithms. All the issues “technical systems missing the mark in relation to society” are just as bad, or worse, and the sheer normalization of the technology at this conference even has been shocking. #mlanet24
Large conference center room, with several hundred attendees seated at circular tables. In the distance three people (Liz Kellermeyer, Dr. Safiya Noble, and Emily Vardell) sit on a stage and are projected on screen.
Packed room at the #mlanet24 John P. McGovern lecture with Dr. Safiya Noble!
The #mlanet24 lanyards are so noisy, I feel like a cat with a bell on my collar.
Very interesting panel on instruction for evidence syntheses projects #mlanet24
several interesting suggestions in the room for the tool - locating Emtree terms, finding seed articles, assessing research results from a librarian built search via DOI to locate missing terms or potential articles. Thanks to @medlibrarian.bsky.social and @melindadavies.bsky.social 🙂 #mlanet24
