@Mojeek actually has a larger search index of The New York Times than Google.

A genuine alternative—UK-based #Mojeek, whose search results are 100% independent of Google or Bing. Mozilla Firefox is open-source & relatively secure & private. An even more private (but still free & equally effective) version of Firefox is #LibreWolf, developed on Codeberg, a German nonprofit

Trying out the Mojeek search engine. Impressed (so far). It has it's own web crawler index making it a real alternative to the Google/Bing duopoly.

Restricted, new news is deficient. Scores in giving results upfront - not that dreadful scroll to get passed the sponsored stuff. I'll keep […]

On alternatives: I'm just trying the #Mojeek search engine. UK built from the ground up. No adverts. Worth checking out (just install it in a browser).

Sent my #Mojeek redesign off to them and they said they have saved it for future inspiration and have taken into consideration the fact that its aesthetic is a big off-putter.

Even offered to share it.

Has anyone else on a mission to find a daily driver search engine that isn't Google or Bing given Mojeek a look? It's been around since 2004, with its own crawler and index of somewhere in the realm of 6-7 billion pages, all run from a data center in the UK run by Custodian Data Centres, who […]

Running site: searches for four of our sites across four engines Google is hiding the number of results for any given search. Google hid this under ‘Tools’ some time ago but now that link no longer works universally. I was able to access it using a vulnerable browser that let everything through, and for this blog, at least, the count is surprisingly poor. Google is so filled with “AI” slop these days that it probably doesn’t want you to access the count very easily. Yandex has also given up showing the count, with no exceptions. Here are how the claimed counts look for some of our sites. Oddly, Mojeek still remains markedly down for _Autocade_ ; it used to deliver over 3,000 results. Bing, after its disastrous 2022, now seems to do a reasonably broad and deep search. Based on this sampling, it’s doing very well, benefiting all its other shells such as Duck Duck Go, Yahoo, Qwant and others. Of course, you don’t know when the index will next collapse, but right now it’s outperforming Google on some of these _site:_ searches. (While flattering, _Lucire_ doesn’t have 29,800 articles online as Google claims, and this site does not have 4,470 entries as Bing claims, unless it’s coughing up a ton of tag and category pages from this blog.) **This site** Mojeek 1,319 Google 1,900 Bing 4,470 Baidu 728 **_Lucire_** Mojeek 5,425 Google 29,800 Bing 6,080 Baidu 2,650 _**Autocade**_ Mojeek 891 Google 5,510 Bing 5,340 Baidu 6,030 **Jack Yan& Associates** Mojeek 602 Google 485 Bing 632 Baidu 41 **You may also like** * How the search engines fare on a _site:_ search here * Putting the search engines through their paces * Testing the seven search engines in the world * Testing the search engines: Bing likes antiquity; most favour HTML over PHP * My real expert opinion on Google, SEO, and the mess that’s to come (not the LLM junk) * January 2025 _site:_ tests on occidental search engines: Bing recovers * How Mojeek, Google, Bing and Brave perform on a _site:_ search here * When anti-capitalists love billionaires

Testing the occidental search engines with site:—Bing most improved Having seen the number of results for _Autocade_ drop on Mojeek—something which they said was unlikely—I thought it was about time I ran another series of _site:_ tests, using our random cross-section. And I have to report that for some sites, the drop is real. I can’t speak for whether the others have actually removed pages, but I know we haven’t. Yet a plunge from 3,103 to 852 is very substantial. Tonight, that number is 865. You can see for yourself how the occidental search engines fare. I suspect Stefan Engeseth’s Detective Marketing website results are down as he is using his own name more, and his is the only one that shows a substantial drop percentage-wise. However, other sites do show noticeable drops, something we haven’t witnessed prior. (I’ve taken results from 2022, 2023, 2024, choosing the test that was nearest the mid-year point; the January 2025 column is there for an extra comparison.) Google is all over the place, showing a big drop for Detective Marketing. It has _Lucire_ on 39,600 (up from 4,150), but I don’t think we have myriads of pages on the site. The Google figures, then, need to be taken with a grain of salt. Other sites show remarkable increases, too, namely the two newspapers’, while Microsoft goes from a claimed 149 million results to over a milliard. In 2022, it would have been hard to believe, but Bing has turned out to be the most improved, with numbers roughly around where you’d expect them to be. **You may also like** * January 2025 _site:_ tests on occidental search engines: Bing recovers * Duck Duck Go is probably scared of Mojeek * My real expert opinion on Google, SEO, and the mess that’s to come (not the LLM junk) * What search engines show in their top 10 isn’t always relevant * How the search engines fared with a new site * Putting the search engines through their paces * Semrush allegedly glitched, misinformation followed * When anti-capitalists love billionaires

Substantial drop in site: results at Mojeek; is Ecosia now Google? I’m told by Mojeek that this should not happen but it has. In October 2023, it had 3,103 results for a _site:_ search for the original _Autocade_ website, beating Google at 2,910 and Bing at 2,170. Mojeek is meant to build on its index but earlier this year, it dropped into the 700s. Currently _site:autocade.net autocade_ (as Mojeek requires a keyword to make a _site:_ search work) nets 852. I theorized that maybe the home page links led to too many dead links (notably blank discussion pages) but I am told that that wouldn’t have been the case. At the time of writing, Google has a claimed 5,180 and Bing at 5,420. What a recovery it has been for Bing, which was near death a few years ago. Another interesting observation from _site:_ searches, this time of _Lucire_ : Ecosia seems to be sourcing from Google now, not Bing. Since GMX is dead for me and potentially others, Ecosia may be a way for people who like Google to get their results, but with more privacy. **You may also like** * Forget Duck Duck Go, Bing, and Google—I’m trying Mojeek * Testing the search engines * If you want a slice of the pie, then compete * Putting the search engines through their paces * How Mojeek, Google, Bing and Brave perform on a _site:_ search here * How the search engines fared with a new site * What search engines show in their top 10 isn’t always relevant * Duck Duck Go adds a _Lucire_ bang

Are they turning off their websites now? #Mojeek and #Baidu were fine. Our own sites are fine, too. But #Google and #Instagram appear to be down.

Aaahhhh, #the European #searchEngine #Mojeek has paged results in mobile and desktop. Not the stupid endlessly scrolling list. Much nicer when deep diving into a topic, particularly on iOS. Enough of a reason in itself to keep this as an alternative to #Google.
