Casting news for the long awaited _Spaceballs_ sequel has finally come out via both Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter with a few notable returns and additions so far. Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, and Mel Brooks will be reprising their roles in the film as Lone Starr, Dark Helmet, and Yogurt, respectively. This is particularly notable given Moranis’ extended absence from Hollywood and Mel Brooks’ age (he will turn 99 this month.)
Also announced is Keke Palmer, though we do not have details on her role in the film currently. However, there’s no doubt Palmer’s comedy chops will shine in a spoof film like _Spaceballs_.
Mel Brooks as Yogurt in _Spaceballs_
The film was initially announced in June of 2024 and that it was picked up by Amazon MGM Studios; however, we learned in January that Mel Brooks would be returning as a producer alongside Josh Gad who is producing, co-writing, and starring in it. Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Detective Pikachu) are co-writers. Josh Greenbaum (Strays) will direct and produce alongside Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody with Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez executive producing.
The film is slated to release in theaters in 2027. I was a bit surprised to learn that the film would receive a theatrical release. That’s not necessarily a given these days especially for a spoof comedy that will rely, at least in part, on nostalgia.
Brooks acknowledged the film on his X account today with the following post:
> I told you we’d be back pic.twitter.com/RnoklPqBX6

Clearly, the Amazon MGM marketing team is leaning into the self-deprecating comedy concerning the fact that this is a sequel. They released the following statement about the film:
> While the title, plot details, and rest of cast are being kept under wraps, the film has been described by those who have not yet read the script as ‘A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two’ but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”
We’re still a ways away from the film’s release, but at this point I expect more casting news to begin to trickle out. Given that they’ve managed to secure Pullman, Moranis, and Palmer, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some additional talent added to the roster that folks may not necessarily be expecting.
