Munguia, Benn, Garcia, and Boxing’s Credibility Contamination
Boxing faces a credibility crisis again as another top boxer, Jaime Munguia, questions the drug testing procedures meant to keep the sport clean.
Munguia joins Conor Benn and Ryan Garcia as three high-profile boxers to question the methods used by VADA, WADA, and others to carry out the collection of samples.
All three either will face or have served out suspensions despite claiming they were the victims of substances entering their bodies unexpectedly.
Releasing a statement this week, Munguia is the latest to question what happens to his bodily fluids when extracted and taken away for examination.
The denial came after Munguia’s B-sample unsurprisingly matched the A-sample and showed traces of synthetic testosterone.
Munguia’s B-sample
“We want to reiterate that this outcome does not change our position: Jaime did not knowingly or intentionally ingest any banned substance,” said Team Munguia.
“We remain steadfast in the belief that this result was caused by contamination, and we are continuing to take every possible step to identify the source.
“At this stage, we are still awaiting clarification from specialists regarding the specific levels detected in the samples.
“As the next step, our team is submitting a list of all supplements and products Jaime used to a WADA-accredited laboratory for testing.
“This is critical in helping determine how the substance may have entered his system and ensuring the integrity of the review.”
Before the latest statement, Munguia’s team had tried to deflect blame from trainer Eddy Reynoso following questions about the coach.
Reynoso’s top fighter and gym leader, Canelo Alvarez, defended his lifelong friend and manager before Munguia added his backup.
“We want to clarify that Eddy Reynoso serves only as Jaime’s trainer. He is not involved in Jaime’s nutrition, supplementation, or medical oversight.
“Likewise, no one on Canelo Álvarez’s team has any role in overseeing Jaime’s regimen or is in any way responsible for this situation.
“Any implication that Reynoso or anyone associated with Canelo’s team bears responsibility is entirely unfounded and unfair.
“The only person responsible for overseeing Jaime’s supplements and vitamins is Marco Antonio Pérez Espinoza, who has worked with Jaime since nearly the beginning of his professional career.
“This is the first time Marco has ever been connected to a situation of this nature, and is fully cooperating in the current review process.”
Munguia is adamant that Espinoza didn’t know of anything ingested that could have caused the positivity.
They added, “One thing we know for certain: Jaime is not a cheater. He did not knowingly or intentionally take anything that would violate anti-doping regulations.
“To suggest otherwise is not only inaccurate, but deeply unfair to a fighter who has always operated with professionalism, integrity, and respect for the sport.
“He has been a consistent advocate for clean boxing and has personally insisted on VADA testing throughout his career because he understands that in a contact sport, the use of performance-enhancing drugs can have serious, even dangerous, consequences.
“There have been several instances across sports where athletes have been cleared after demonstrating that contamination—whether due to human error or tainted products—was the cause, and that there was no intent to cheat.
“We are hopeful that a thorough review will bring similar clarity to this situation.
We recognize that the responsibility for ensuring full VADA compliance ultimately lies with Jaime and our team.
“We take that responsibility seriously and are actively reviewing every detail with the utmost diligence, working alongside experts and relevant authorities, to understand what occurred and find the source of the substance detected.”
Other contamination cases
The cases of Benn and Garcia, both of whom faced punishment before returning to the ring, had similar feelings to Munguia.
Benn signed up to VADA soon after despite his claims, but Garcia made unsubstantiated allegations before the New York State Athletic Commission worked out a plea deal.
“The test results from samples of two supplements declared by Ryan Garcia on VADA Doping Control Forms, signed on April 19th and 20th, have returned positive for Ostarine contamination,” read the official information sent to WBN from Garcia’s legal team.
“This confirms what we have consistently maintained: Ryan was a victim of supplement contamination and has never intentionally used any banned or performance-enhancing substances. Any claims to the contrary, questioning Ryan’s integrity as a clean fighter, are unequivocally false and defamatory.”
No testing body ever faced any charges, pointing to a lack of evidence to prove mishandling.
Another case, dating back to Lucien Bute in 2016, ended with the same result – a punishment for the boxer.
In 2020, former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko warned his fellow professionals about the dangers of contamination in a WBC video.
Klitschko said, “Your body is more than just your work tool. It is your number one asset for your entire life. But it must be treated with care and respect.
“It needs to be trained with rigor, and it must be fed with care.
“I concentrate on a special diet adapted to each stage of my physical and mental preparation. I call this situation-specific nutrition.
“I know many boxers are taking them; that’s not a secret. But the truth is that many supplements will never replace a balanced diet.
“Above all, these famous supplements you add to your diet often risk your health. They are sometimes contaminated with doping drugs.
“The short-term benefits you may gain will jeopardize your long-term well-being. Please don’t play with your health because it is the foundation of your success—the foundation of your career after your sports career.
“Be strategic; Vada had put together some good advice. Take advantage of the Vada BSCG testing initiative. As a VADA fighter, you can have your supplements tested to ensure they are free of PEDs (performance enhancing drugs).
“Before taking a supplement, ask yourself what it does for you. Is there a way to get the same supplement-free result?”
Munguia’s case continues with a suspension and a no-contest for his revenge win over Bruno Surace, the probable outcome.
The super middleweight contender reversed a stunning knockout loss to Surace by winning a unanimous decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, last month.
Boxers must realize they have to step up and control every single morsel of anything that they put in their bodies.
