Jaime Munguia won’t rule out trilogy, but focuses on the future In the brutality of boxing, the protagonists must settle some rivalries, while others remain entangled in redemption and controversy. The story of Jaime Munguia and Bruno Surace is a tale of both, and World Boxing News has gained exclusive insight into the Mexican star’s perspective on the two fights that have defined his last year. Months after suffering the first loss of his career to Canelo Alvarez, Munguia was sent into a freefall when the unheralded Surace shocked the world by handing him a brutal KO loss. In May 2025, Munguia avenged himself with a decision win, but saw the victory marred by a failed drug test, a controversy that only recently concluded with his clearance. It is against this questioned backdrop that WBN inquired about a possible rubber match with Surace. A Difficult Journey of Growth When asked to reflect on the two fights and the controversies that surrounded them, Munguia did not shy away from the struggle. “They were difficult experiences, but also opportunities to grow,” Munguia told WBN. “The loss taught me a lot about myself and what I need to improve. The controversy was frustrating, but now that I’ve been cleared, I can move forward. Both experiences made me stronger mentally and physically.” The answers reveal a fighter who is not just seeking retribution, but also personal growth. The knockout loss and subsequent drug test controversy appear to have tempered the fighter, forcing the super middleweight star to evolve and re-evaluate a new path. Trilogy Talk Despite his recent career setbacks, there is some interest in staging a decider. When WBN asked Munguia if he believes a third fight is needed, his response uncovered a man focused on legacy rather than grudges. “If the fans want it, and it makes sense, I would definitely do it. I don’t shy away from challenges. But right now, my focus is on moving forward, taking the biggest fights available, and continuing to prove myself at the highest level.” His response is clear. The priority is not a third battle with Surace, but a continued ascent up the ladder towards another world title shot. The Future Jaime Munguia’s journey has been anything but smooth. It is a story of a viral knockout, a controversial win, and the unrelenting pressure of a public clamoring for a trilogy. But it is a journey that has clearly prepared him for the most critical phase of his career. Munguia’s response suggests that he has emerged from this ordeal as a more focused and mature fighter. Jaime Munguia eyes swift return from drug test drama Jaime Munguia has been cleared of a failed drug test and is planning a swift return to the ring, telling WBN exclusively that he is hungry to fight before the end of the year. The Mexican star, who was pulled into headlines earlier this year when an adverse finding sparked speculation, has now put the issue behind him. His focus is squarely on his comeback and on silencing critics in the ring, starting this November or December. A Swift Return to the Ring Munguia confirmed he has been keeping sharp in the gym and is eager to get back in front of the fans. “As soon as possible,” he told World Boxing News. “I’ve been training, I’m hungry, and I want to get back in the ring to show fans the best version of me. Hopefully, November or December.” This swift return is crucial for the 28-year-old, who has a professional record of 45-2 with 35 knockouts. While he has shared the ring with top names like Canelo Alvarez and John Ryder, his most recent loss to Bruno Surace in December was a shocking knockout that he has already avenged. A top-tier comeback fight is crucial to solidifying his status and re-entering the pound-for-pound conversation. Munguia’s Defense of Eddy Reynoso The issue of the drug test is now closed, but Munguia was adamant that criticism of his long-time coach, Eddy Reynoso, was misplaced entirely and unfair. “I think it’s completely unfair and unwarranted,” Munguia told WBN. “Eddy is a world-class trainer and an amazing person who dedicates his life to his fighters. To put the blame on him for situations outside of his control isn’t right. As I’ve mentioned a couple of times before, Eddy Reynoso has nothing to do with my diet or supplements.” The Next Challenge: Top Names in the Division Munguia left no doubt that his ambitions remain unchanged. “I want the biggest and best fights. Of course, I would love opportunities against the top names in my division, and I’m ready for whoever my team decides. I just want to prove myself against the very best.” This statement puts to bed any lingering speculation surrounding his focus, while also underlining his desire for legacy fights rather than damage control. With a clean slate and the support of his team intact, the ex-Canelo opponent is determined to make his exoneration the launchpad for a defining showdown before the year closes. Munguia, Benn, Garcia, and Boxing’s Credibility Contamination Boxing faces a credibility crisis again as another top boxer, Jaime Munguia, questions the drug testing procedures meant to keep the sport clean. Munguia joins Conor Benn and Ryan Garcia as three high-profile boxers to question the methods used by VADA, WADA, and others to carry out the collection of samples. All three either will face or have served out suspensions despite claiming they were the victims of substances entering their bodies unexpectedly. Releasing a statement this week, Munguia is the latest to question what happens to his bodily fluids when extracted and taken away for examination. The denial came after Munguia’s B-sample unsurprisingly matched the A-sample and showed traces of synthetic testosterone. Munguia’s B-sample “We want to reiterate that this outcome does not change our position: Jaime did not knowingly or intentionally ingest any banned substance,” said Team Munguia. “We remain steadfast in the belief that this result was caused by contamination, and we are continuing to take every possible step to identify the source. “At this stage, we are still awaiting clarification from specialists regarding the specific levels detected in the samples. “As the next step, our team is submitting a list of all supplements and products Jaime used to a WADA-accredited laboratory for testing. “This is critical in helping determine how the substance may have entered his system and ensuring the integrity of the review.” Before the latest statement, Munguia’s team had tried to deflect blame from trainer Eddy Reynoso following questions about the coach. Reynoso’s top fighter and gym leader, Canelo Alvarez, defended his lifelong friend and manager before Munguia added his backup. “We want to clarify that Eddy Reynoso serves only as Jaime’s trainer. He is not involved in Jaime’s nutrition, supplementation, or medical oversight. “Likewise, no one on Canelo Álvarez’s team has any role in overseeing Jaime’s regimen or is in any way responsible for this situation. “Any implication that Reynoso or anyone associated with Canelo’s team bears responsibility is entirely unfounded and unfair. “The only person responsible for overseeing Jaime’s supplements and vitamins is Marco Antonio Pérez Espinoza, who has worked with Jaime since nearly the beginning of his professional career. “This is the first time Marco has ever been connected to a situation of this nature, and is fully cooperating in the current review process.” Munguia is adamant that Espinoza didn’t know of anything ingested that could have caused the positivity. They added, “One thing we know for certain: Jaime is not a cheater. He did not knowingly or intentionally take anything that would violate anti-doping regulations. “To suggest otherwise is not only inaccurate, but deeply unfair to a fighter who has always operated with professionalism, integrity, and respect for the sport. “He has been a consistent advocate for clean boxing and has personally insisted on VADA testing throughout his career because he understands that in a contact sport, the use of performance-enhancing drugs can have serious, even dangerous, consequences. “There have been several instances across sports where athletes have been cleared after demonstrating that contamination—whether due to human error or tainted products—was the cause, and that there was no intent to cheat. “We are hopeful that a thorough review will bring similar clarity to this situation. We recognize that the responsibility for ensuring full VADA compliance ultimately lies with Jaime and our team. “We take that responsibility seriously and are actively reviewing every detail with the utmost diligence, working alongside experts and relevant authorities, to understand what occurred and find the source of the substance detected.” Other contamination cases The cases of Benn and Garcia, both of whom faced punishment before returning to the ring, had similar feelings to Munguia. Benn signed up to VADA soon after despite his claims, but Garcia made unsubstantiated allegations before the New York State Athletic Commission worked out a plea deal. “The test results from samples of two supplements declared by Ryan Garcia on VADA Doping Control Forms, signed on April 19th and 20th, have returned positive for Ostarine contamination,” read the official information sent to WBN from Garcia’s legal team. “This confirms what we have consistently maintained: Ryan was a victim of supplement contamination and has never intentionally used any banned or performance-enhancing substances. Any claims to the contrary, questioning Ryan’s integrity as a clean fighter, are unequivocally false and defamatory.” No testing body ever faced any charges, pointing to a lack of evidence to prove mishandling. Another case, dating back to Lucien Bute in 2016, ended with the same result – a punishment for the boxer. In 2020, former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko warned his fellow professionals about the dangers of contamination in a WBC video. Klitschko said, “Your body is more than just your work tool. It is your number one asset for your entire life. But it must be treated with care and respect. “It needs to be trained with rigor, and it must be fed with care. “I concentrate on a special diet adapted to each stage of my physical and mental preparation. I call this situation-specific nutrition. “I know many boxers are taking them; that’s not a secret. But the truth is that many supplements will never replace a balanced diet. “Above all, these famous supplements you add to your diet often risk your health. They are sometimes contaminated with doping drugs. “The short-term benefits you may gain will jeopardize your long-term well-being. Please don’t play with your health because it is the foundation of your success—the foundation of your career after your sports career. “Be strategic; Vada had put together some good advice. Take advantage of the Vada BSCG testing initiative. As a VADA fighter, you can have your supplements tested to ensure they are free of PEDs (performance enhancing drugs). “Before taking a supplement, ask yourself what it does for you. Is there a way to get the same supplement-free result?” Munguia’s case continues with a suspension and a no-contest for his revenge win over Bruno Surace, the probable outcome. The super middleweight contender reversed a stunning knockout loss to Surace by winning a unanimous decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, last month. Boxers must realize they have to step up and control every single morsel of anything that they put in their bodies. Sign up for the WBN Newsletter for free and get daily news directly in your email.
