D&D is great for explaining video game design to kids.
Tabletop RP is the epitomy of open world game design. Start trying to romance side characters or burn down buildings however, and you'll end up with an angry DM.
Open world always has bounds.

DnD thoughts:
I finally realized the #1 reason most DMs hate the XP leveling up system. Our party 💀 a lot of NPCs. So I can’t imagine if leveling up was dependent on how many people we off. The group would instantly become murder hobos. DMs don’t want to deal with that sh$t.

Variety #2 The DMs least-favourite co-worker, possibly in a wizard's hat. -Favoured among DMs that don't go to therapy. -The players definitely won't hate them as much as the DM wants them to. -Probably.going to die horribly, regardless of the players plans. Variety #3 That 'cool' minifigure that your DM bought / printed last week. "Did it fit the setting?" "No." "Were we even capable of damaging it?" "... No." "Was there *anything* we could have done to avoid it??" "Now that you mention it... No." "THEN WHY DID YOU RUN IT R.A.W?!!? "It has abs AND tentacles man."
