One of the (many) problems with painted cycle lanes is that they give drivers the false impression that they're overtaking safely, when in reality they're well short of the minimum 1.5m clearance.

Active Travel England have data from a study of 100+ schemes that shows that 'old fashioned schemes' (i.e ones comprising of just paint) will 'kill 10% more people than just doing nothing and get no uptake in cycling rates' whereas LTN1/20 scheme will get 'between 20-60% more uptake and halve the number of deaths' - 'that's pretty powerful stuff'
