An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

Taking another sip of his drink, Sam peered at Raffica. “I’m surprised you aren’t bothered by this stuff.”
Sils: “Same, actually. I didn’t know you could hold yer alcohol so well.”
Raffica puffed out her chest. “Hehehe. I have many hidden talents.”
Jahd: “Wanna see which of us can hold it better?”
Helena: “Can you even get drunk? I thought you were immune to poison and stuff.”
Jahd: “Nah. Alcohol ain’t poison.”
Sam: “It definitely is.”
Jahd: “Don’t just judge it by its taste. Medicine tastes bad, too.”
Raffica: “I think I’d lose either way, so no thanks.”

Jackie looks nice in their Draconian outfit, don't they? I mean, I'm imagining they do. We're sadly lacking an artist's rendition...

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

Helena narrowed her eyes at Jackie, studying their new outfit. “Isn’t that a bit… revealing?”
Jackie: “Yes. Yes it is.” They flexed their arms, inspecting their own form. “It’s ‘cause the back has holes for wings and a tail. That’s fine, though; it enhances my cuteness.”
Helena scoffed. “As if. Why exactly do you need to look cute, anyway?”
Jackie: “I think Sils wants to rely on my perfect mix of masculine and feminine charm to attract customers.”
Helena: “How much ‘masculine charm’ do you have while wearing a skirt, exactly?”
Jackie: “Well, apparently all the boys in Draconis wear skirts, so probably a lot.”

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

Even after she did join the fray, she’d played it safe. She didn’t take risks, and because of that, Raffica had gotten badly hurt. Lii could shrug off cuts like that; if someone had to get hurt, it should have been her. Instead, her cowardice had forced her new friend to suffer that pain.
Raffica was a good person. She was so kind and outgoing, like a bright star masquerading as a girl. Even knowing what Lii was, she’d reached out and eagerly accepted her as a friend. Knowing she’d hurt such a wonderful, perfect person through her inaction, it made her want to smash her head against the wall.
Why? Why hadn’t she acted? Why hadn’t she done more? Why did she keep letting her friends get hurt?
Because she was still terrified of herself.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

Beihart had made a habit of sizing up his opponents before any fight. He had a talent for it, though Lieutenant Marjoriee often scolded him for getting so absorbed in those thoughts. It was one of the few points on which he vehemently disagreed with his superior officer. True, he might get too caught up in his analysis at times, but it usually granted him very useful insights.
Take his current opponent, for example. The Zombie was standing even after taking a blast of his blunderbuss. That alone was impressive, but he’d also managed to block the follow-up attack. He was strong, hardy, and had a quick reaction time to boot.
Furthermore, his weapons told the tale of a wise and experienced warrior, one who understood his racial magic well. A two-handed primary weapon and two lighter, one-handed weapons as backups; he’d seen other Zombies employ similar arsenals to make the most of their regeneration and Autotonomy. That he carried those weapons also implied he had the skill and experience necessary to fight in multiple styles—with his odachi, with his dual swords, and potentially even with just one.
Altogether, Beihart was convinced that the man standing before him was a formidable adversary. He judged that the Zombie likely matched him in combat skill, or was perhaps even his superior. However—

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

The events that played out in Avek Tirion had been a wake-up call for Strade, in multiple ways. First, it had truly alerted him to how dangerous this mission was. They’d been assaulted by enemies he couldn’t possibly stand against—and those hulking titans of armor had numbered in the dozens. Second, it had shown him the reality of what ‘war’ was. He had heard that Jackie and Sam fought against a couple soldiers from Evendel, but he hadn’t truly understood the gravity of fighting against other, real people until he was involved in it himself.
‘Involved’ wasn’t the right word. He hadn’t done a damn thing.
Third, and perhaps most importantly, that battle had revealed to him just how weak he was. He couldn’t hold a candle to those Volundr mechs, or to Admiral Kyte, or even to the more normal-seeming members of his team like Jahd and Raffica. He was just Human, born without any racial magic he could utilize in battle; he would always be at a disadvantage.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

It still felt surreal to her. Evendel had enjoyed an era of peace under King Elliana’s reign, even beginning to nurture friendly relations with the people of Avek Tirion. Then they bombed Raes unprovoked; it was perhaps the single worst tragedy to befall her nation in her entire lifetime, and it was an affront Evendel would not soon forgive.
It would have been natural for the king himself to lead the charge; if not him, the high general, or either of the other generals. It was a conflict of great import, after all.
Instead, the task was handed down to her—a mere lieutenant in charge of conquering another nation. It baffled her as much as the rest of the nation.

An excerpt from the chapter. It reads as follows:

Jackie was no stranger to death, or to the act of killing. The Heap made for an unforgiving home—edible plants were few in number, and the majority of its inhabitants were intelligent hunters. Some were more beastly in nature, such as the Kuzumade, but most had similar levels of intelligence to Humans—not to mention similar body plans.
Where was the line between a 'person’ and a ‘monster’? Recent events had convinced Jackie that there wasn’t really a line at all. Lii was a monster—a Mimic—but she was clearly also a person. They would have previously considered Kritta monsters, but now they knew that civilized Kritta lived outside of the Heap. In the right circumstances, could even something like a Kumori be a civilized person?
Such ponderings weren’t of importance at the moment. What was important was that Jackie had, by necessity, killed throughout their entire life, and that included killing things that could be argued to be people. That was simply the normal way of life for them. Things hadn’t seemed much different in the outside world, either; they had larger groups of people and fewer intelligent monsters, and they used terms like ‘war’, but it seemed that this world, too, was built on a foundation of violence and killing.

Raffica and the mech were stuck in a stalemate. She was too fast for it to land a hit, but the mech was too armored for her kicks to do any real damage. She was strong enough to bat it around and keep it distracted, but not enough to knock it down or make any real progress.
She knew that was probably enough. Her job wasn’t to eliminate all the enemies herself, but to prevent them from causing further damage to the pier or their ships. To that end, keeping a mech occupied all by herself was more than enough of a contribution. Even if she couldn’t defeat it, she could handle it until one of the people who could arrived to take over. It was too late to change course and evade. The sword’s arc was too low to duck beneath, too high to leap above. With no other option, Jahd faced the oncoming blade and held his own in front of him, placing one hand on the flat as he braced for impact.
Against a foe several times his size, one wielding a sword several times the size of his own, he prepared to block the attack. Metal met metal, sparks screeching between the blades. The smaller warrior stood firm, bearing the brunt of the colossus’s strike with ease—naturally, such a thing did not occur, but Jahd accomplished what he set out to. Instead of being cleft in twain, his body was merely sent careening backwards, flipping through the air like a ragdoll.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

That its strategy had been overcome was unexpected, but it did not matter. No, it should not matter. With the power granted by the master, it should be able to kill each of these creatures with ease; instead, they were gaining the upper hand. They had wounded it, even though they were weaker. It was inconceivable. How were they overwhelming it when it alone had been blessed by the master?
This was just like before. Things that were weaker than it had banded together, gained the upper hand, and wounded it. Therefore, just like before, the correct thing to do would be to flee. If it escaped, it could regenerate, gather new forces, and invent new stratagems. It could discover how the living kept overwhelming it and prevent that from ever happening again. It could fulfill the purpose the master had granted it.

“Far as what I can offer ya… more freedom, fer one. You’re too valuable ta let Evendel get their hands on ya, so I’ve no choice but ta keep ya here in camp; I can lax on that if you’re workin’ fer me. ‘Sides that… a salary?”
The Humans gave her puzzled glances. Sam spoke for the collective,
Sam: “What exactly is a ‘salary’?”

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

Even so, she didn’t have much of a choice in the matter. She couldn’t exactly disobey Lieutenant Marjoriee, and her role in this stratagem was an essential one. Someone had to be there to wrangle the Firefly, lest it fly off in some random direction or suddenly decide it felt less tame than the day before and eat one of the soldiers it was meant to serve.
That someone ended up being Annelys. She should have foreseen this and specialized in taming monsters that were less useful, but that opportunity was long past.
While that stood at the top of her grand list of ‘Things Annelys Ought To Have Done’, right below it on the list was ‘not miss that Harpy’. She’d thought for sure she’d lined up a perfect shot, but the bullet had merely hit the pirate’s wing. To make matters worse, that hadn’t even been enough to completely prevent the Harpy from flying, and she and her companion had flown off to hide in some other tree.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

Sils: “I said I’m goin’! I ain’t gonna sit back an’ let Celeste die out there!”
Jahd: “You can’t! We need you here, keeping things in order!”
Sils: “I never asked to be in charge, damn it!”
Jahd: “You are in charge. I’ll save her, but you need to stay. They,” he gestured broadly at everyone else, “need order, especially if there’s an attack while we’re gone.”
As captain and first mate glared at each other, the others around the room exchanged nervous glances. Just as Sils seemed ready to sling another retort, she was cut off by the clap of someone slamming their hands down on the table. All eyes turned to the source—a young, red-haired girl.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

None of the terms Viz or Delia provided had been the same as the nation Lii had mentioned before—Elysium, she’d called it. Had it disappeared, or perhaps become one of the two warring nations that now occupied the land?
Well, these two had been forthcoming so far. Might as well just ask.
Jackie: “You three ever heard of a place called Elysium?” A moment later they added, “Check.”
Delia and Viz cast puzzled gazes at Jackie while Raffica cocked her head.
Viz: “Uh, in history books, sure.”

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

Jackie had a vague plan in mind when they set out to gather information. They wanted to learn about two things: Humans and common sense. Their first goal, of course, had been to see Makala; they’d ended up learning much more about Humans there than expected, which was a nice bonus. Asking anyone else about it might raise suspicion, so that was out of the question; luckily, they could research their ancestors and gain some common sense at the same time.
The people here spoke the same language as them—thank Eve—so it stood to reason that they might write in the same language, as well. If they could get their hands on some books—particularly historical texts—they could learn about the events that led to their race’s ‘extinction’ while also learning more about the outside world’s culture.
While learning about Humans was important, gaining some common knowledge would likely prove even more valuable. Many things that were universally understood out here did not exist in the Heap, leaving Jackie with various gaping holes in their ability to understand the world around them. They hadn’t even known Palooza was a ‘cat’ until Raffica said the word while scratching its chin.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

Sils: “It ain’t easy to just accept that some extinct race walked right outta the Heap.”
Helena: “I wouldn’t exactly say we ‘walked right out’, but…”
Sils: “Things don’t escape the Heap often, courtesy of the Basilisks. Nine times outta ten, they’re Mimics. Ten times outta ten, we kill ‘em, whatever they are.”
Strade placed a hand on one of the knives at his belt, snarling. “That what this is? Want to kill us outta sight of your lackeys?”
Sils narrowed her green eyes with amusement. “Please. First of all, my guys ain’t that weak-stomached. Second, if Jahd thought y’all were a serious danger, he wouldn’ta let you get half this far.”
Jahd: “Third of all,” he said as he stepped forward, placing himself at the edge of Sils’s table, “I’ll have ta remove ye if ye threaten the cap’n.”

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

Naturally, there wasn’t just one Basilisk. There were many, and they were condensed into a much smaller space than Jackie had expected even in their worst estimates. They counted at least half a dozen massive shapes lurching through the distant jungle nearby; those were just the ones they could see well enough to count.
This was the impassable barrier that guarded the edge of the world. Once one Basilisk awoke, it would awaken its neighbors in turn. The simple chain reaction converted the jungle into a hellscape of lumbering shadows and imminent doom.
And they were stuck right in the middle of it.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

The mere concept of an “outside world” nagged at Jackie’s mind. What separated the outside from the Forgotten Heap? Lii had described how the ecology was completely different, how the monsters of the Heap were extreme rarities rather than commonplace, how people gathered in large groups—nations and kingdoms, even—without any regard for a taboo.
They doubted creatures like Kumori or Mimics or Carrion would be effected much by things such as climate or environment. What prevented them from being as commonplace on the outside as they were here?
There was only one natural conclusion—at the edge of this world and the outside lay an obstacle more terrifying than anything that lived within the Heap. At the very least, it was something uniquely tailored to keeping the wasteland’s monsters inside.
Lii had entered the Heap alone, so it surely wasn’t an impassible obstacle, but it worried Jackie nonetheless. How had she gotten past it?
Well, she was sitting right there. No harm in asking.
