🗿NABATAEAN NEWS🗿

Recently (2024), Laïla Nehmé published four #Nabataean texts from a burial site in north-western Saudi Arabia. Three are very fragmentary, but the fourth is the longest Nabataean text on stone found so far! Two things that stood out to me:

Petroglyphs of pecked footprints at Umm Huwaiwitat.

Petroglyphs of pecked footprints at Umm Huwaiwitat.

Do these petroglyphs, from Umm Huwaiwitat near #Petra 🇯🇴 depict footprints? 👣

They likely date long before the #Nabataean and #Roman periods, displaying the importance of examining under-investigated periods at famous sites 🏺

A #portrait of a #Nabataean. Nabataeans used a form of #Aramaic in #Arabia and the #Levant. The script they used then developed into the #Arabic script.

In the photo, we see many “buildings” carved into the sandstone cliffs and hills. To the right is a huge amphitheater, similar to Roman design, but entirely carved out of sandstone. Rectangular carvings above the theater might have been mausoleums for prominent families.

There are hundreds of similar views in Petra and it is still being excavated. One of our guides told us that only 30% of the city has been excavated.

Petra (Greek for Rock) was a busy trading center for the spice and incense trade via land-based caravans. The Nabataeans controlled a critical portion of the trade route and grew wealthy facilitating the trade between China and India and the Mediterranean region.

While much of the architecture in Petra has Greek influence, the Nabataeans also incorporated design elements from Rome, Egypt, and India in their buildings and arts.

For #Scape Friday, I share a #landscape / #cityscape from world-famous #Petra. This grand city was the capital of the #Nabataean kingdom. The Nabataeans were contemporaries of the Greeks and Romans.

Hidden high in the mountains of #Petra is the #Monastery. Similar in design to the #Treasury but far bigger (50m wide and 45m high), it was built in the 3rd century BC as a #Nabataean tomb. Look at that view!
