Relief flooded through Seokjin. He was far too tipsy to be listening to secret conversations. In all honesty, he should have alerted them to his presence, but too much time had passed by the time he’d figured out the conversation was secret. He shook himself. It was fine now. He was in the clear. They were gone. He relaxed and took a step toward the curtained entrance— —and ran smack into a large, well-built chest. He stumbled backward, biting down a yelp. Yet, instead of hitting the ground, a large arm reached out, wrapping around his waist to steady him. “Careful.” He blinked. Before him was the tall alpha he’d noticed earlier. However, this time, he was only inches away. Up close, Seokjin noticed there were flecks of light brown in the man’s eyes. Like light dappling a forest floor. Unusual. Seokjin swallowed, fighting down attraction. The feeling was startling. He so rarely found alphas—or, for that matter, anyone—attractive.
The man looked just as surprised as Seokjin felt. His nostrils flared briefly as though he smelled Seokjin, which Seokjin knew was impossible. He’d been using the strongest scent blockers in Sool since he was a child. Even so, the man’s eyes darkened as Seokjin’s heart began to beat rapidly in his chest, and he tightened his grip on Seokjin’s waist. The man searched Seokjin’s face for a second before seemingly coming back to himself. His eyes widened, and he stepped backward before bowing deeply. “Your Highness, I didn’t see you there. My sincerest apologies.”

Now, Seokjin noted several people who hadn’t been introduced at the start of dinner. Three men and one woman, all with braided hair, pulled back in the same manner as Aki’s guards. Seokjin watched as another guard approached them before patting Taehyung’s back, like they were good friends. Seokjin frowned, wondering if he had miscalculated the guards’ status, but then the man looked at him—and his brain stopped working. The man was gorgeous. There was no question of whether he was a soldier in Seokjin’s mind. He was tall and densely muscular—Seokjin estimated that he probably weighed about fourteen stones. Unlike the others, whose hair fell at varying lengths, this man had his hair pulled back in a loose bun, showing off the sharp planes of his face. But the worst part was that Seokjin could smell him, even from across the room. His scent was earthy, not unlike Sool’s forests after a summer storm. It filled Seokjin’s nostrils, causing the hair on the back of his neck to stand up. Seokjin knew that the K’oitinai didn’t take their scent blockers very seriously, but gods—this was unfair.
Seokjin didn’t consider himself a very sexual being, because his sexuality wasn’t something he could safely explore. Keeping his omega status a secret was more important than his pleasure, even his comfort. So, he kept his fantasies locked away in a tiny corner of his brain reserved for emergencies. Heats mainly. However, he couldn’t deny that this man was the kind of alpha he would conjure up in every single one. Just looking at him made Seokjin’s mouth go dry. Seokjin was about to turn away when the man looked at him. It was only for a brief second. He was reaching to grab the carafe of liquor that was in the center of his table, smiling at something Taehyung had said to him, and then—boom. He was staring right into Seokjin’s eyes. Distantly, Seokjin noted that the man’s eyes were beautiful. Sharply intelligent and mono-lidded. The man held his gaze, a small smile blooming on his face. He tilted his chin downward in acknowledgement of Seokjin. Seokjin tore his eyes away, cheeks flaming. Gods, had the man realized why Seokjin was staring? The thought caused heat to flood him and sweat to prickle on the back of his neck. Frantically, Seokjin grabbed his glass and took a long swig of it, only to realize it was empty. His face heated up again, and he leaned into Jungkook—anything to look preoccupied. “A refill, please, Jungkook-ah?”
