The animation definitely suffered at points too, where characters will just slide across a frame, but the story here just feels so incomplete knowing bits and pieces of where it goes from here.
Never going to happen for a variety of reasons but a full adaptation is an impossible dream. #Narutaru

Just an incredibly depressing point to end on. I know the end of the manga isn't super happy either but still.
I can't even remember how much of the manga the anime covers, but we don't even learn why Shiina doesn't have the same connection to Hoshimaru here. #Narutaru 13

I cannot even fault Hiroko for losing control, that was pretty horrifying even if the camera panned away.
One of those revenge killing scenarios definitely gets reused in Bokurano too, Kitoh would get cancelled today I'm sure. #Narutaru 12

This whole time I thought "Akira's voice actor sounds familiar" and didn't even notice it's Noto Mamiko because the character speaks with such an unsteady cadence all the time. #Narutaru

Also Koga Norio showed up one episode earlier, if I remember correctly they're maybe transfemme, but were dressed in just pants for their art workshop and used "Boku" so I could be misremembering. #Narutaru

The evil group of kids who are trying to change the world challenge the JSDF with weapons they made and shared with each other, but they keep failing or falling apart.
Meanwhile there's some kind of sex stuff going on in the sidelines, but it's a Kitoh manga so that's to be expected. #Narutaru 7

Shiina and Akira are not handling the trauma of episode 3 well, either by Shiina overeating to the point of making herself sick (trying to follow her bad mom's bad advice) or Akira shutting herself in her room and cutting off her "pretty hair" (understandable, that guy *was* creep). #Narutaru 4

Shiina's estranged mother (a government official or researcher) just talks at her daughter about her failing grades and to take better care of herself on her birthday; no wonder she doesn't want to be a mom. #Narutaru 4

This kid with the knife dragon child sucks more than I remembered. Attacks Shiina while trying to recruit Akira to be his queen in a 1000 year stone age empire with the ultimatum "Shave yourself or shave the world." Very "everyone is 12" philosophy of how the world works. #Narutaru 3

Turns out Akira has a star creature too but it's not as cute as Hoshimaru.
Shiina stumbles on Akira's family restaurant and we get the first hints that she doesn't share a connection like the others as they become friends.
Akira's classmates were awful when she 1st collapsed too.

Akira, a very nervous girl, joins Shiina's kenjutsu class in order to "become stronger without hitting anyone else," but freaks out when she sees Hoshimaru.

A lot in that 1st ep, Shiina nearly drowns swimming to a torii gate when she spots Hoshimaru underwater, flies through the sky on his back the next night and sees a girl covered in tattoos riding a dragon that appears from the sea. Plus her dad's childhood drawings of similar monsters. #Narutaru 1

S: "How do they expect me to draw my dreams on this tiny piece of paper?"
Grandma: "How big of a canvas would you need?"
S: "Earth-sized."

My submission piece for #thepiggypatrol #mangaofthemonth competition. I managed to get into this month's issue! The theme was 'hope'. I decided to go with #narutaru; while it is very nihilist, it does end on an inconclusive, yet hopeful note about Shiina's new world being better than before.
