At the #NCASC24 race and racism session, I was one of the Black audience members who commented. I have had to take a couple of weeks to reflect and reorientate. Here is why 🧵
We've caught our breath after #NCASC24. Thanks to all who joined our sessions, stopped for a chat, and shared ideas with us.
Getting together with likeminded passionate people is a reminder of why we're all here: to create social care that enables people to live life their way.
Some highlights:
So pleased to be able to step in to listen to some amazing @lgalabour.bsky.social Group colleagues during a meeting at #ncasc24 share some fantastic best practice examples of how they are working hard for Adults & Children ❤️
My week consisted mostly of Children social care with a sprinkling of adults too.
#NCASC in Liverpool.
A couple Ministers of state, OFSTED top boss, loads of officers and of course lots of local councillors that all work hard to make people's lives better.

Causes for optimism from #NCASC24
- The platforming of those who draw on care and support
- Commitment to support young people to prepare for adulthood
- Focus on 'early action' as a way of investing to grow our places
- Recognition of the role that housing has in people living fulfilled lives
Just got back from the #NCASC24 (Social services conference). Great to hear hope & realism. Still looming workforce issues but more commitment to removing the companies who are profiteering from childhood trauma. Liverpool lovely as usual 🌹

📅That’s it for Another Year📅
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came to our workshops, our event with Agilisys, our lunchtime chats with Partners in Care and Health, and our exhibition stand to learn about #DigitalInnovation and #GenAI.

Farewell, for now, Liverpool. One of the top, and best, cities in the world.

Really enjoyed my short time at #NCASC24. Learnt about some great new AI initiatives, had an opportunity to talk about #SASCIproject findings (more here: www.sasciproject.uk). Thank you @scie.org.uk for inviting me to be part of a great session!
Just back from #Ncasc24
Social battery drained (not usual for me) good to reconnect with colleagues and exchange rewards and opportunities

A huge thank you to everyone who attended our final #NCASC24 workshop—Accelerating Reform Fund (ARF): How to enable scaling innovation in social care.
It delved into the first six months of learnings, challenges, and co-production in projects.

In 10 Year Health Plan session, @sallywarren.bsky.social says Health ministers are hugely ambitious about children’s health. Lots of cross government thinking on this. #ncasc24
Notable that the final keynote at social care’s big annual event #NCASC24 is @sallywarren.bsky.social talking about the 10 Year Health Plan. Reminder that health reform is happening while social care reform is not, yet.
Last session of the week - excellent #NCASC24. Great conversations had here in Liverpool 😊

Liverpool looking great this morning.
Join us in a few minutes at the big chat with Leicester City Council talking about coproduction and social care futures plumbing and wiring project. Starting at 10:15 at #NCASC24
Reassuring that @jamesbullion.bsky.social is overseeing this, a lot at stake for councils & the people who depend on them for #socialcare #ncasc24
Unattended pick and mix at @scie.org.uk #NCASC24? I’m going to need a bigger bag…
A lovely moment at #NCASC24 yesterday. In a session on “managing demand” Anna Severwright challenged the term. A mutually respectful & productive conversation with speakers led to some clear commitments to find better language exploring the win-win of better lives & sustainable public services.
A real anxiety at #NCASC24 not relieved by a ministerial speech with many numbers which didn’t convince people in the hall that they added up. No sugar coating that govt decisions to date will make life harder for people who draw on social care. Time to offer some light at the end of the tunnel

3. Meanwhile the recent budget has dealt a hammer blow to already fragile and struggling providers, and in turn to local councils who fund them. The Ministers responses on this at #NCASC24 will have reassured noone
Comments from the audience at this race&racism session are powerful. It is distressing to be having the same conversation 20,30,40 years later… our Black colleagues are tired, angry & carrying pain. And yet we ask them to meet the needs of Black children & families carrying the same pain. #ncasc24
The *brilliant* Jahnine Davis now sharing messages from the Safeguarding Panel’s work on race & racism #ncasc24
Up now: Anna Gianfrancesco (Asst D in Brighton) sharing work to develop anti-racism. Attending to info captured, trust / engagement with families. Practitioners need time & permission to do the emotional & mental work. System change not just training. #ncasc24
Annie Hudson (National Child Safeguarding Panel) recognising that the Panel has been - and still is - on its own journey re anti-racism. Has been an increased focus on Black & minoritised children in its work. #ncasc24
Been looking forward to this session all conference - much needed focus.
Race, racism & racial bias - implications for safeguarding children. #ncasc24
Janet Daby MP giving a speech at the National Children and Adults Services conf in Liverpool
@janetdaby.bsky.social delivered a powerful Nat. Children & Adult Soc Services Conf speech highlighting #LocalGov ‘s vital role in supporting vulnerable children amid rising costs & workforce challenges. Her focus on prevention & early intervention shows she truly understands the issues
