And so the first time is in his memory as a part of him like his eyes, as all the calluses he used to have when he was Lin Ling instead of Nice, and as the doughiness inside his body, as the trepidation in his spine, as all the swollen bits up his backside when his rib cage moved again. And it reminded him. It muttered back. It expanded. It filled him out. It made him larger. It made him tiny; it made him suffocate. He tore his shirt. And that was the last thing that bore his scent, that said that somehow he made it here, that said that somehow he was alive, he was a hero, he made it big. Because in half an hour it’d be gone. It’d be thrown out. It’d be burned. And all the clothes—left—for his options were an alpha’s he had to play. And so—honestly—he might’ve prayed. He didn’t look away. He couldn’t turn. And when the first line began to show, he couldn’t tell himself it wasn’t true.
