Black square with Birds Canada and the owl survey logo and text: Why Survey Owls? Read on: Crazy night ... on the drive to our first stop we counted 35 Ruffed Grouse, several on the side of the gravel road but most very high up in poplar trees and silhouetted against the overcast sky. Never have we seen that many grouse. Obviously same as last year, the habitat along the road has been greatly altered ie harvested/ clearcut. At stop 10, ie approaching the stop, we almost hit a wolf running across the road, but we still sampled the station. Following, on route to stop 11, there was moose cow and her yearling calf on the road (thinking we interrupted a chase ie pred/prey). And about 1km after stop 20, we saw a Barred Owl sitting on a Poplar branch overtop of the road. Saw 2 snowshoe hares. Overcast skies at the beginning of survey lifted around stop #8 as able to see stars.

A map of northern Ontario showing route locations scattered across the road-accessable north. If you cannot use the map call or email Kathy and let her know you need assistance. Hearing is the important sense for surveying owls but... someone must drive the vehicle.

This is why people love surveying owls in Northern #Ontario. Consider participating this April.
