#NuuchaNulth #Tseshaht #Hupacasath leaders in Port Alberni were instrumental in the rights movement in Canada.
"Eneas said at the time he was on the phone regularly with his friend George Watts… They wanted to see if the RCMP would show up for this fake protest at a bridge in Port Alberni, B.C […]
A view over a parking lot shows mostly clear blue sky, with wisps of cloud, highlighted, yellow, and orange by the setting sun. The sun is in the middle, just barely above. It's the ridge line. To the right of the sun is a plume of smoke and steam
Today's sunset over Arbutus Ridge in #portalberni #nuuchanulth #tseshaht :TseshahtFN:
#Hupacasath :hupacasath:
Only 20 or so more days of it moving down the ridge line....
(the plume is mostly steam from the paper mill)
#sunset #today #winter

a bald eagle 🦅 flies I in the sky against the gray clouds
A black raven sits at the top of a fir tree looking toward us
The archers are almost here.
Lots of birds around. A seagull making more awake than he should lol. A bald eagle. And a Raven watching us from across the river

enjoying the rivers edge while we wait for the march. It started up river about 2km from here at the former site of the Alberni Indian Residential School.

Looking out along Victoria Quay in Port Alberni over the Somass River. There are often bears on the other side, especially this time of year, looking for salmon. There is a res paved stone walkway with grass at the edge and some park benches. A small statue of a bear stands atop a plinth with 100 Port Alberni. For the centennary in 2015.
The sculptures are welcoming people into #Hupacasath territory from land and sea. One is a man looking toward us and land and one a woman toward the sea just behind.
The Whaling sculpture is of :TseshahtFN: hunters. Their territory extends down the Alberni Inlet while Hupacasath is in the Valley. there is a figure holding a large harpoon at the head of the canoe while other figures paddle behind. The whole thing is carved from a large douglas fir log
The flag for hupacasath flies atop a pole near the welcoming statues in a small park
Walked from my house to about the halfway point of the full march waiting for them to arrive. This is Victoria Quay, the Welcoming Figures and the Whaling Sculpture.
These are at the foot of Johnston Road / Highway 4 in #portalberni at the Tsu'amaas (Somass) […]

And by coincidence the AV News is running this impactful story of personal reconciliation for an Indigenous woman who is now a manager at the Tin-Wis Resort.
CW: trauma, abuse, healing […]
Consider this when you think of all the tourists that go to Tofino and the West Coast. One of the most famous resorts, Tin-Wis Best Western Resort.
“Old Christie, as it was commonly known, closed in 1971 and the children were moved to a new complex located at the site of Tin Wis Best Western […]
Screenshot of the article shows the headline with a picture below. The picture is historical. Taken from a boat just off the shore of a beach. The water looks flat, but there are small waves going into the beach. On the shore above the beach is a collection of buildings. They look steer. The sky is gray cloud cloudy.
A thoughtful Truth and Reconciliation Day to all in this place called Canada. 🍁
May we collectively pause and consider what has happened, what continues, and what must happen in future to be better.
The past is still very very present here in […]

A map shows a radar image of rain around the northern sections of central vancouver island. There are a number of place marks including Flores Island on the left edge of the Island north of Ucluelet and Port Alberni
Our son is getting a real west coast experience today. He spent the night with his high school outdoors class hiking and camping on Flores Island, Ahousaht Territory. It is north of Clayoquot Sound and Tofino.
Camped on the beach last night. It was beautiful and […]

[Foster Care - Troubled Families - Abuse]
In my town. There is too much of this kind of tragedy.
18 years old and she froze to death outside on a residential street. Why was she outside? Where were the people who were supposed to be caring for her.
There is so much wrong with how foster care […]
