ICED OUT: Ahmad Perez and his left-leaning organization Islip Forward last month planned to hold an event on Long Island with Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado. Then a call came from Hochul’s office. What happened next is a matter of dispute. Perez told Playbook he was warned by Hochul’s Suffolk County regional representative, Thalia Olaya, to not hold the event with the administration’s estranged No. 2 — or face the consequence of being frozen out of the governor’s office. Hochul’s office maintains Perez was simply told by Olaya that Delgado, now the governor’s Democratic primary opponent, does not speak for the administration. Either way, the phone call underscores the concern Hochul’s team has for Delgado and his long-shot bid to topple the governor. A Siena University poll last month found Hochul with a massive 40-point lead over Delgado. Perez spoke with Olaya on Nov. 16 — after Delgado’s planned appearance at the Dec. 6 event to oppose the federal government’s aggressive immigration enforcement policies was announced.
Perez said that in that call Olaya told him that Delgado, whose family is from Cape Verde, misrepresented himself as Latino. She also offered a meeting with the governor if the organization dropped Delgado and suggested that not doing so would result in consequences, according to Perez. “We would essentially be iced out of any future engagement work or activities with the executive chamber,” he said of the alleged threat. “We would no longer have a voice at the table. We were literally being barred.” Perez’s group plans to formally endorse Delgado next year. The lieutenant governor attended the event, held this weekend, as planned. “As many New Yorkers may be unfamiliar with the role of the Lieutenant Governor, a call was made to the organization to clarify that he does not speak for, or represent the Executive Chamber,” Hochul’s office said in a statement. “The organization appears to be mischaracterizing elements of that call to fit their preferred narrative.” Hochul’s team, though, has taken steps to minimize Delgado after his very public break with the governor this year. A former House member from a purplish district between Albany and New York City, Delgado has tried to draft off the excitement of Mamdani’s Big Apple success — banking that an anti-establishment mood among voters will be scaled up to the gubernatorial campaign. — Nick Reisman
