A black and white ink drawing of a turkey vulture, perched on a stump. She is wearing clothing adorned in imagery from her diety. She carries a scythe made of bone. Beneath her feet lies the bones of another turkey vulture, with coneflowers growing from the remains. There is a goldfinch eating the seeds of one of the coneflowers, in a celebration of the cycle of life and death. This has been my final Octobird, and I thank you very much for reading.

Cathartes aura
Grave Domain Cleric
“This gentle and often misunderstood follower of Kelemvor has a deep respect for death and its place in the natural order of things. She knows that without death, life cannot flourish. Her work is to protect that balance, and to ensure that the dark powers that tamper with life beyond death are kept at bay, preventing the untimely demise of some while speeding it along for others.”

Artist’s notes: This subclass and bird are very important to me. I’m currently playing a Halfling Grave Domain Cleric who faces frequent judgment from others about her beliefs and comfort with mortality. Vultures are deeply misunderstood birds and are a critically important part of any ecosystem.
She’s sitting on an old hollowed tree stump, which is growing mushrooms, moss and ferns. On the ground in front of her are the remains of another Turkey Vulture. From those remains, Black-Eyed Susans and Coneflowers are growing, which are being enjoyed by a Monarch Butterfly and American Goldfinch. Her scythe is made out of large wing bones.

A black and white ink drawing of a wild turkey hen, shepherding a group of birds. There is a Gambel's Quail walking out front, a flock of chickadees flying along, a barred rock chicken sitting on the turkey's back, and a tiny Carolina Wren sitting atop the turkey's walking stick. The turkey is wearing a little crown of flowers on her cute bald head.

They understand her intentions and affection, even without words, and if she calls them to her side, that special connection they share empowers them, making them stronger and more resilient.”

Artist’s notes: The tiny bird on the shepherd hook is a Carolina Wren. The Barred Rock Chicken on the druid’s back is a reference to Foxfeather R. Zenkova’s “Turkey mom” and her adopted chicken child. The bird trotting out in front is a Gambel’s Quail. The birds in flight are a flock of Black-Capped Chickadees.

“She sways and stumbles with a crop full of overripe berries, keeping her foes guessing. As the sweet berry wine ferments, she may lurch and wobble, but she’s in complete control of herself and the battlefield. *hic!* She zigs when they expect her to zag, nimbly swoons just in time to avoid a well-placed talon swipe, then takes down a room full of assailants, making it look like they all tripped over themselves.”
Artist’s notes: Yes, this is totally a thing; Cedar Waxwings do get drunk on fermented berries! If you see a drunk Waxwing in the wild, please call your local wildlife rescue facility. They might recommend you put the bird in a paper bag for a few hours to sober up.

“This mighty warrior has dedicated his life and strength to the preservation of the word of law. His bravery and loyalty are beyond reproach as he works to protect civilization itself from the forces that would see it fall, and his unflinching, unshakable resolve in the face of adversity makes him the perfect champion of the less fortunate. He gladly sacrifices himself to protect the downtrodden from their oppressors, interposing his will between them and withstanding injuries in their stead.”

“She lurks silently in the shadows, waiting for the opportunity to strike. Once she’s set her sights on her target, she won’t give up until the job is done. And they’ll never see her coming. Her training extends to espionage as well; she can craft false identities and impersonations so convincing that they allow her to track her targets out in the open, insinuating herself into their affairs.”
Artist’s notes: The victim/target in this illustration is a Black-billed Magpie. My own personal headcanon is that the Magpie somehow dodges the Nuthatch’s thrown dagger and the pair becomes best friends after the encounter. I thought that a Nuthatch would make a great rogue because they can walk straight down a tree trunk, and upside-down on branches.

Artist’s notes: Sometimes you can find bees at Hummingbird feeders.

A black and white ink drawing of a hummingbird, who is flying and interacting with honey bees. She's wearing a tiara that gives her the appearance of antennae. Around her neck is a cluster of honeybee allies, clinging to her. In her tiny feet, she is carrying a flower, which is sparking the interest of a bee. A black and white ink drawing of a bespectacled male cardinal all dressed up in scholarly robes. There is a magic circle drawn on the ground under his feet, emitting light. He's conjuring some kind of magic in his left foot. He's got a scroll in his belt, a large medallion dangling from his necklace, and some rings on his leg. All magic items, one could presume!

Northern Cardinal
Cardinalis cardinalis
Arcana Domain Cleric
“This devout follower of Ioun has dedicated his life to uncovering ancient, secret magical knowledge, which he protects from those who would abuse it and hide it away forever. Unlike many who merely yearn for power in their pursuit of magical secrets, he understands the risks and responsibilities involved in seeking such knowledge. His only wish is to preserve archaic writings and materials that would otherwise be lost.”

Artist’s notes: This Cardinal doesn’t have poor eyesight, he only wanted to appear smarter. Probably an Ioun nerd thing.

A black and white ink drawing of a friendly and joyous-looking female eastern bluebird. She is gently holding a wooden staff in her wing, while fluttering one wing out in the typical bluebird wing-waving display. Her mouth is open and little sparkles are coming out of it, as if she is singing. She's wearing a necklace with a moon on it, a little ornament on her head, and has a belt with a pouch of berries (dnd good berries) dangling. She's jumping and you can see the lighter colored bottoms of her feet. There is a little ladybug hitching a ride on her tail.

“A welcome guest among the kind-hearted courts of the Fey, she serves as an ambassador of sorts. She travels the world, spreading peace, love and joy to those who need them most. Her otherworldly connection allows her to traverse the dreamy veil between the realms, bringing with her a boon of healing and protection, as well as the power to move endangered creatures out of harm’s way.”

Artist’s notes: Bluebirds do this adorable thing where they will flutter out a single wing to be a little showy for their mate. It’s so endearing. They usually do this while singing. Bluebirds' songs are one of my favorites.

A black and white ink drawing of a very strange grackle. The bird has tentacles protruding from its body, representing the great beast that it draws power from. The grackle is holding a staff in its feet, has its wings outstretched, its feathers are all poofed out, and is hovering in front of a spellbook filled with mysterious runes. There are two pieces of jewelry on its legs, one of which has a single cat-like eye, representing its powerful patron. The bird's tongue is extended, and its eyes are wide. It's a very creepy expression, and this piece has a borderline horror vibe!

Pact of the Tome Warlock, The Great Old One
“In the midst of a terrible nightmare, he found a connection to... something. Beyond the cosmos, beyond comprehension, it granted him power, and time will tell what that power will cost him. He reaches into the minds of others, speaking without words, extracting thoughts, creating false visions, and even taking complete control of the bodies of others.”

Artist’s notes: I love when Grackles poof out their feathers and let out a quick, sharp call. When this Grackle casts a spell, I’m sure he lets out a deep and guttural bellow.

A black and white drawing of a greater roadrunner, a bird with a very long tail, x-shaped feet, and a cool crest. He is wearing a vest and a beaded necklace while jumping and kicking, wings slightly extended, striking a cool pose. His crest is fluffed up and he's showing off the patch of bare colorful skin next to his eye. His mouth is open, like he's crying out "hyaa!"

His punches and kicks are imbued with the sun’s energy, launching mighty bolts of solar power at his enemies and keeping would-be attackers at wing’s length.”

Artist’s notes: The Greater Roadrunner from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, AZ inspired this drawing. If you’ve never seen a Greater Roadrunner’s face, I recommend you look them up! Check out their blue, red and white undercut, their stunning black and gold eyes, and their perky head feathers. They’re such charming birds!!!

She is one with the flames of the forge, their power coursing through her and allowing her to unleash searing heat as she overwhelms enemies with her hammer.”

Artist’s notes: I usually tried to avoid drawing birds using their wings as “hands”, but in the case of this Barred Owl, this is a pair of enchanted gloves that allows her to grasp heavy things using her wings. When she removes the gloves, she can fly normally.

“He zips through the trees, faster than the eye can see, almost as if he’s barely even there. He disappears and reappears so quickly that few can track his movements. Indeed, his mastery over the boundaries between the planes of existence allows him to move almost effortlessly from plane to plane, acting as a guardian against terrible things most of us have never even heard of.”

Artist’s notes: Birds would always have an easy supply of feathers for the fletching part of the arrow. I made him look a little bishie because Titmice always look like they’re wearing lovely eye makeup.

“Once her nictitating membrane draws over her eye, she goes into a frenzied rage and won’t stop her assault until her enemy is a pile of pulp at her feet. She often ends up with a belly full of delicious bugs by the time she’s done, and just as often, she doesn’t remember any of it.”

Artist’s notes: Woodpeckers seem like natural Barbarians to me. I love the idea of woodpeckers going into a rage, and being impervious to physical damage (maybe part of the reason that woodpeckers don’t get headaches when they’re relentlessly pecking into wood).

An osprey diving with an excited expression as she looks at her talons with a little eel monster helper coming out of them. She's holding a large hook for catching large fish. She's a warlock!
