Three academic books on Old Irish, one of which is very large.
See this is why I have to pack the big suitcase for the DIAS summer school. #oldirish #celticstudies

@imc-leeds.bsky.social Medieval book purchasing has begun with two rare finds for my #OldIrish studies more to come this week! #imc2025
In #OldIrish (well up into Classical Gaelic) relative clauses with ‘whose’ relation (‘the man whose son is there’ type of thing) often didn’t contain any possessive pronoun.
Eg. the above ex. could be expressed in Classical Gaelic as ‘an fear fhuil mac ann sin’ (or ‘… a-tá mac ann sin’). 2/n

So much to look forward to this Christmas #medievalsky, including the #OldIrish advent Calendar by @davidstifter.bsky.social and @dhaydenceltic.bsky.social.
If you're intrigued by what the #OldIrish reading group @celticstudiesmu.bsky.social has translated so far, tune in next Thursday!
Until #medievalsky, rest assured that you can book that vineyard trip for medicinal purposes so long as you avoid the 'strong new wines'.
If you're intrigued by what the reading group has translated so far, here's more information on the text itself kindly supplied by @dhaydenceltic.bsky.social.
Tune in next Thursday #medievalsky to hear what else the @celticstudiesmu.bsky.social #OldIrish reading group cohort will discover.
An early Irish medical manuscript: King's Inn MS 15, f. 96v.
Today #medievalsky the #OldIrish reading group learned what is 'comforting' for your eyesight:
Food that is contrary to the list 👆, the colour green & the colour of a monk's hooded cloak, walking through vineyards, & washing your eyes with cold water with your eye[lids] open, unless you're elderly.
What 'gassy' foods should we avoid to protect our eyesight?
Well #medievalsky, according to this #OldIrish medical text we should stay clear of garlic, leek, onion, hard eggs, old cheese, kale/cabbage, meat/beef, & strong new wines!

How could I forget this sage piece of advice?
This #OldIrish medical text also cautions us to avoid 'the reading of too small letters' which is, undoubtedly, the weakness of all the manuscript and programming people on #medievalsky and #digitalhumanities.
Ah, yes! In my haste to post before the #OldIrish reading group began, I forgot to include this important piece of advice.
So, remember #medievalsky to mind your eyesight and take your shoes off before you go to bed or before you have that little nap during the day. 🤫
The medieval medical #OldIrish reading group is about to kick off here @maynoothuni.bsky.social. So far, the text has advised us on how to protect our eyesight by avoiding excessive sex, staring at bright & shiny things for too long, staying in darkness too long & avoiding gassy foods! #medievalsky
An ogam blog I thought about starting last year...one day I'll write some more. But, in the meantime, my single post on the bríatharogaim!

Last week I had the great privilege of looking at Cambrai MS 679, which has the oldest example of Old Irish prose (fols. 37r-38r), a homily on the colours of martyrdom. #manuscript #medieval #oldirish (1/2)
