I still feel new in this space! I'm looking to connect, learn & share. Any tips on great communities & how to use this growing space - I'd love to hear from you.

It's a terrible title, isn't it?! Chosen by someone trying to lure in listeners, I suppose.
But it's helped lots of people, many of whom had it played to them by their palliative care nurse or GP.

Thanks Trisha and @timmorton2.bsky.social

We've got to keep talking about #OrdinaryDying, because the public discourse is way more fearful than it is well-informed.

Photo of a Facebook comment to me from palliative care nurse Anna. It reads:
I’m a palliative care nurse. I had a dying patient last week whose relative told me ‘I know what to expect I’ve read a fantastic book by Kathryn Mannix’ it was a perfect way to frame the conversation I was having. And they were not afraid of what was to come. Thank you

This is why I do what I do.

The stories of the ordinary dying doesn't win votes but is my day to day reality and it is important those coming to the end of their life know that it is likely to be theirs too. #ordinarydying

Dying for Beginners | Dr Kathryn Mannix In modern British society, death is out of sight and behind closed doors. Many of us lack direct exposure to the dying process - with all sorts of potential emotional and spiritual consequences for how we grieve our loved ones, as well as how we prepare for our own deaths. What does the dying process actually look like? A short animation by Emily Downe, and voiced by Dr Kathryn Mannix which guides you gently on a step by step journey through the process of dying. Acclaimed author, speaker and former palliative care physician Dr Kathryn Mannix has spent her medical career working with people who have incurable, advanced illnesses. The author of two Sunday Times Bestsellers – With The End in Mind and Listen, Dr Mannix is on a mission to reclaim the public’s understanding of dying. We need to start by explaining #OrdinaryDying (e.g. bit.ly/TheosDFB)
Then we can talk about how we maintain symptom control once the dying person can't reliably waken to swallow meds towards the last few days of life - when syringe driver maintains comfort but doesn't shorten life.

I maybe should have mentioned that #havetheconversation is a big interest of mine…

CPR is not a treatment for #ordinarydying. Please, please sort out the protection of a DNACPR/DNR for someone whose life is coming to its end, before it’s too late.

It's such a tricky one to navigate: almost always the best plan is to bask in that unexpected & short period of lucidity & extra energy. But it triggers doubts about the overall deathwards trajectory in companions & staff alike.
We've forgotten the features of #OrdinaryDying.

I think it's essential that young people become aware of the process of #OrdinaryDying in a safe, thoughtful space.
Should be part of National Curriculum, with age-appropriate sessions preceded by parent/carer info sessions so that adults are primed to continue discussions at home.
