There’s a rot in his chest, Shunya knows. Shunya admits readily, even if only to himself. After all, what use is there in denying it? Not when it’s filled up the cavity in his chest where a heart is supposed to be so completely. Not when it’s starting to reach out, to corrupt the air and the world. He doesn’t expect anyone to love this rot. It is a rot, see, that makes it so that he cannot love like most is supposed to love. Born out of neglect and nurtured by all the unfulfilled wishes of a once innocent child. Yet here he is, exposed. Here he is, chest cut wide, rot in full display for his god to see. To judge, perhaps. To detest, to ignore, to do anything but to touch it gently, barely breathing. “You hate me now,” Shunya says with a wry smile. But Toma shakes his head. Toma looks at him, unreadable. Then he digs his own fingers into his chest. His tears open seams that Shunya did not even notice were there. And there, exposed right where his heart should be, is a rot. Just as deep. Just as ugly.

What Shunya wants is to own Toma completely. None of that half-baked we can love without a name or we do not have to be something more as long as we have each other. Because where did that lead his parents? In the dark, blood on their hands still yet unable to truly be together. He needs to be more. He wants to have a name. He wants to be everything to Toma. So, he pushes Toma down roughly as he marks his neck. And so, he holds Toma’s waist roughly so he cannot ever run. What Shunya wants is absolute certainty that he isn’t alone. That oh, his beautiful god is his, here, calling him love and ready to be ruined by his hands.

That’s not love. Toma lets those words sink into him. Angry, confused, yet entirely too kind, there’s so much in them that Toma can’t quite take. It’s not because they aren’t true, because they are. And it’s not because Toma denies the truth, because he accepts it entirely. This isn’t love, and Toma has never expected it to be love. He is incapable of that. Or perhaps it is best to say that they both are incapable of that. They’re only capable of wanting, of desire, of possession. But never, ever, anything quite as beautiful as love. So, the words sink into him. And yet, the words will never matter. This isn’t love. Toma has never meant it to be.
Shunya doesn’t wish to ascend to godhood. He’s grown up around those who desire so, only for it to become their undoing. Then worse, he held the hand of a god only to realize that it could bestow warmth but never receive any back. There’s no joy in godhood, Shunya realizes. There’s no pleasure in being divine. Being a sinner, however, is ecstasy in its purest form. And there is no greater sin than to destroy a god. That’s why when he sees a god under the moonlight, he’s instantly filled with the desire to defile him. To break him into pieces, to make him his. There is no joy in being divine. So, with this sin, he will give joy to his god of the moonlight. He will make his god human, into a vessel that could be loved, entirely so.
