Lifer number 1 today, the female Ortolan Bunting at Wykeham Forest, this morning. Only had 2 short views of her, inconspicuous and almost nervy, but an absolute belter of a bird. Paired with a Yellowhammer and some said observed with nesting material? #yorksbirding #ortolanbunting #birds
🌍 Ortolan bunting (Emberiza hortulana) The ortolan bunting is a small, brown, sparrow-like bird, with a grey head, yellow 'moustaches', and a white throat. It is typically found in open scrubby areas, farmland, and woodland edges in Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. In breeding season, males are highly territorial and sing loudly to defend their territory. They are known to be secretive and skulking birds, often hiding in dense vegetation to escape detection. They forage on the ground for seeds and insects. Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1) Note: Possibly now in decline due to illegal hunting. 📷: Photo by akbarnemati via Pixabay KHNV
