The immersive, abstract narrative style is right up my alley, and the engagement with characters and relationships was perfectly balanced with the surrealist aspects of the book. It was creepy, cosy, and page-turning.

Gave a really long writeup of what I just finished reading over on my Insta, it was a trip. Absolutely was not ready for the massive gut punch Julia Armfield delivered me.

I used to think there was such a thing as emptiness, that there were places in the world one could go and be alone....the error in my reasoning was to assume that alone was somewhere you could go, rather than somewhere you had to be left. #booksky

what the actual fuck was that.
WOMEN LOSING WOMEN.
i am so fucking sad for miri.
what the hell was that creature.
why did they send the crew there.
why, why, why, why
what happened to matteo.
why did she become THAT. WHY DID SHE BECOME THAT.
Our wives under the sea by Julia Armfield
#OurWivesUnderTheSea is a heartwrenching and emotionally real speculative novel which traps us inside the heads of its two leads like someone trapped in a failing submarine.
Pros
Beautiful prose
Emotional writing
Strong and deep characters
Cons
I desired more world building!

A slow start but then Our Wives Under The Sea becomes unputdownable. It's a strange & beguiling read. A must-read for any other sea lovers.

The cover of Julia Armfield's book "Our Wives Under the Sea", which shows a woman's face partially obscured by water
I am reading #JuliaArmfield's #OurWivesUndertheSea and it is beautiful, desperate and utterly heartbreaking.
Anyone else read and enjoyed it?
NB I've not finished it yet, so no spoilers, pls.
A copy of Julia Armfield's novel Private Rites
I loved #ourwivesunderthesea by Julia Armfield and now I also love Private Rites: weird, watery, queer, apocalyptical re-imagining of King Lear. WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE. Guaranteed to give you strange dreams 10 / 10.

I used to think there was such a thing as emptiness, that there were places in the world one could go and be alone. This…is still true, but the error in my reasoning was to assume that alone was somewhere you could go, rather than somewhere you had to be left.

Finished reading #OurWivesUndertheSea by @JuliaArmfield which is a haunting queer horror. I wasn't ready for the cosmic horror element, but I loved it as it's so my thing. Great book that I definitely recommend #queerhorror
