In 2024, MCD’s Healthy Lincoln County gave out nearly 400 free naloxone kits and trained 276 people in Lincoln County, Maine, to respond to an overdose. On #InternationalOverdoseAwarenessDay, help us continue this work👉 https://loom.ly/bcHLQXY #IOAD2025 #OverdoseAware #EndOverdose #PublicHealth
Signs of opioid overdose Alert: is the person drowsy or unresponsive? (Try to rouse them by rubbing your knuckles hard against their chest bone.) Breathing: is the person breathing at a slower rate than normal (breathing less than 10x/min)? Color: does the person have an unusual complexion (turning blue, purple)? ! Remember the ABC’s! What to do: Call 911 immediately. Administer naloxone (Narcan), waiting 3-4 minutes to administer another dose. Give rescue breaths and monitor until help arrives. Source: Connecticut Department of Public Health
Overdoses are preventable. Together we can: Support harm reduction services. Learn the signs of overdose and how to respond. Reduce stigma. Always carry naloxone if you or loved ones are at risk. Promote access to evidence-based and effective treatment. Share resources and connect others to reliable information. Funding for overdose prevention resources and research is crucial to continue providing the services that we know work, and to develop new prevention strategies. Yale School of Public Health

Medication-based treatments for opioid use disorder work. Yale researchers found that compared to no treatment, methadone and buprenorphine reduced the risk of death by 38% and 34% respectively. However, non-medication treatments, such as abstinence-based programs, were associated with an increased risk of death by 77%. How do they work? Buprenorphine and methadone help manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings, lowering reliance on opioids. Yale School of Public Health Source: Drug and Alcohol Dependence
Harm reduction saves lives. Harm reduction refers to a range of interventions that aim to reduce harms around substance use, while respecting the autonomy and dignity of individuals to make informed choices and meeting people where they are, without any expectation of abstinence or treatment. On illustration of a road, is text, Decrease unexpected exposures to opioids in contaminated illicit drugs Help people have options to not use drugs alone (using alone puts people at higher risk of overdose) Distrubute fentanyl test strips Expand access to naloxone Source: Yale Program in Addiction Medicine
Access to naloxone is vital. Fast-acting, safe, life-saving medication. Can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Can be purchased OTC in most pharmacies. The Yale Community Health Care Van and other harm reduction programs offer free naloxone. CTDPH offers the free Naloxone and Overdose Response App (NORA). Source: Connecticut Department of Public Health
Reducing stigma can help prevent overdoses. Research has found that stigma related to substance use may increase the risk of overdose. Ways to address stigma, according to the research: * Offer overdose prevention and naloxone training in welcoming settings. * Utilize peer outreach approaches, where people who use drugs share prevention messages in their networks. * Use person-first language. * Acknowledge the societal, rather than individual, causes of substance use, and that treatment works. The Overdose Decline and why prevention works Yale School of Public Health
Overdose deaths are declining. CDC provisional data shows a 24% drop in overdose deaths (Sept 2023–Sept 2024).* That’s 27,000+ lives saved in a single year. Within this report, 45 states saw decreases in overdose deaths. Five states (Alaska, Montana, Nevada, South Dakota, Utah) still saw increases. *Note: CDC’s numbers are early estimates based on the most recent available information. They may be updated as more death certificates and records are processed. Yale School of Public Health Source: CDC
Progress is possible when we use tools that work: Naloxone (Narcan®): Reverses opioid overdoses Harm Reduction: Syringe services, fentanyl testing strips, and harm reduction centers help prevent overdoses and other health issues Addressing Stigma: Stigma is a significant barrier to treatment Medication-Assisted Treatment: Methadone and buprenorphine reduce risk of relapse & overdose Yale School of Public Health Sources: Yale Program in Addiction Medicine, Harm Reduction Journal
"Our son Alec passed away alone on his 26th birthday from the disease of addiction - ashamed, afraid, and without access to an overdose prevention center that could have saved his life. He had carefully placed Narcan by his side, but no one there to use it. Harm reduction saves lives. We must invest in these proven measures to give people like Alec another chance to live and recover." - Dita Bhargava, MPH ‘26 Executive MPH student

They are here in our communities, harming lives every day.
We need to stay focused on real solutions: prevention to stop the cycle, enforcement to keep people safe, and compassion for those battling addiction. Turning away is not an option.
