"The Well Below the Valley" is an Irish variant of medieval murder ballad called "The Maid and the Palmer", which was published in several anthologies including the famous "Child Ballads". It is speculated that the song was inspired by the story of the woman at the well from the Bible. Due to its dark subject matter (infaticide and incest), it was considered unlucky by folk singers, who didn't want to perform it. The ballad was presumed to be lost in oral tradition in all British Isles. However in the sixties it was discovered, that some irish tinkerers still sung it . The Irish band Planxty popularised this ballad under the name it is known today, and since then it was covered by many artists. Despite the disturbing lyrics I find this song strangely beautitul, so I decided to make an illustration to it. I used several references such as: "Farmland at Dunloe Lower" by David Medcalf, the 15th century painting "Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well" by Juan de Flandes and "Old Male Body - Reference photo pack" by @ReferencePacks .
