Young People’s Satisfaction With and Perceived Impact of a Multichannel Mental Health Helpline During and After #covid19 Pandemic: Mixed Methods Analysis of Cross-Sectional Survey Data Background: In the UK, there was an increased demand for young people’s mental health helpline services during #covid19, when face-to-face services were often inaccessible. Despite this, there is scant research examining young people’s experiences with these helplines during the pandemic and post-pandemic periods. Objective: Using a cross-sectional survey, the mixed methods study examines young people’s (aged 16 to 25+) experiences with the multi-channel helpline provided by The Mix, UK’s leading online mental health support service for young people during and after the pandemic. Methods: From February 2020 to October 2023, approximately 16,000 users aged 16 to 25+ contacted The Mix’s helpline. All users were sent an email by The Mix following helpline contact to answer their user survey. Of these, 796 participants aged 16 to 25+ answered the survey, representing a response rate of 5%, with a survey completion rate of 65%. To address potential non-response bias and missing data concerns, a multiple imputation procedure using the MICE package in R provided a final imputed sample for both the pandemic (n = 295) and post-pandemic (n = 501) periods. Open-ended survey responses from users were also explored. Of the 796 participants who responded to the survey, there were 1183 open-ended responses from 486 respondents. Of these, a total of 731 open-ended responses (approximately 60% of the total responses) were coded. The criteria for inclusion were applied by two independent coders. Excluded responses focused on single words (e.g. ‘thanks’), irrelevant text, or duplicated entries, ensuring only responses containing substantive feedback were analysed. Results: During the pandemic, young people who contacted the helpline reported greater perceived impact on their wellbeing immediately following the first lockdown and during the second and third lockdown restrictions compared to those who contacted the helpline during the gradual easing period; phone users reported higher satisfaction than those using the contact form. Post-pandemic, helpline users who identified as ‘other’ in terms of their gender reported less satisfaction, while male users reported greater impact on their wellbeing compared to female users. Qualitative analysis revealed how the participants felt supported by the helpline such as ‘feeling heard’ and ‘being empowered’, and areas for improvement across service delivery, protocol, and technicalities. Conclusions: The findings highlight the important role that helplines play in supporting young people’s mental health, particularly in crises like the pandemic. This study underscores the need for service improvements to ensure young people continue to feel supported by helplines, highlighting key areas for improvement in service delivery, protocols, and technical infrastructure. Future research should explore channel preferences and minority experiences, often underrepresented in helpline studies.

U.S. holiday spending set for steepest drop since pandemic, PwC survey shows (Reuters) -Holiday spending by U.S. consumers is set for its steepest drop since the pandemic as shoppers — particularly Gen Z — pull back amid economic uncertainty, a PricewaterhouseCoopers survey showed. PwC, which polled about 4,000 U.S. consumers between June and July, said shoppers on average plan to spend about $1,552 per person, down 5.3% from last year. The last comparable decline was in 2020, when average spend fell 7.6% to $1,187. About 84% of consumers expect to curb spending over the next six months, especially on apparel, big-ticket items and dining out. More than half said price increases are likely to affect their holiday decisions. Inflation and the economic fallout from the Trump administration’s trade policies have made shoppers more cautious about discretionary purchases, while major U.S. retailers face uncertain demand heading into the crucial holiday season. Target, Best Buy and Home Depot have maintained their annual forecasts in the recent weeks. Walmart and Abercrombie & Fitch raised their outlook, while Mattel cut its forecast. "Consumers are approaching holiday purchases more deliberately, deciding what matters most, where to scale back and what feels worth the splurge," PwC said. Spending on gifts is expected to take the hardest hit, falling 11% to an average spending of $721 from $814 last year, according to the survey. Gen Z budgets are expected to shrink by 23%, compared to a 37% rise in 2024. 3rd party Ad. Not an offer or recommendation by Investing.com. See disclosure here or remove ads. PwC added that actual purchasing behavior could still shift, noting uncertainty around tariffs has eased since July. With MAT making headlines, savvy investors are asking: Is it truly valued fairly? In a market full of overpriced darlings, identifying true value can be challenging. InvestingPro's advanced AI algorithms have analyzed MAT alongside thousands of other stocks to uncover hidden gems. Peloton must face shareholder lawsuit over pandemic inventory claims Investing.com -- Peloton Interactive will have to face a lawsuit claiming it misled shareholders about excess inventory as COVID-19 pandemic restrictions eased, following a federal appeals court ruling on Wednesday. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan reversed a lower court decision, allowing shareholders to proceed with claims that the exercise equipment maker made three false and misleading statements that artificially inflated its stock price. Among the contested statements was former CEO John Foley’s claim during an August 26, 2021 earnings call that a $400 price reduction on bikes represented an "absolutely offensive" sales strategy rather than a defensive move to address weakening demand. The lawsuit also challenges two warnings in Peloton regulatory filings about hypothetical risks of "excess inventory levels" that shareholders argue had already become reality. Circuit Judge Steven Menashi, writing for the 2-1 majority, noted that shareholders presented evidence suggesting the price cut was actually a defensive measure to clear three months of accumulated inventory. "In sum, we conclude that the plaintiffs have plausibly alleged actionable misstatements or omissions," Menashi wrote in the ruling. The shareholder lawsuit followed a period when Peloton’s stock price plummeted more than 80% between February 5, 2021 and January 19, 2022, coinciding with widespread vaccine availability and the reopening of gyms.
