Manipulonyx reshetovi: Designed for Thievery Discovered in 2025, Manipulonyx reshetovi was a cat-sized dinosaur from Late Cretaceous Mongolia (72-65 mya). Its name comes from the Latin “manipulare” meaning “to manipulate” and the Greek word “onyx” meaning “claw”, in honor of its well-preserved claws. Manipulonyx belongs to a group of dinosaurs called the Alvarezsaurids, who generally sport similarly mysterious arms with just one large claw. Thanks to Manipulonyx, scientists have theorized that alvarezsaurids’ strange claws helped them steal and eat one thing: the eggs of other dinosaurs! Claws and bony bumps on the skin helped Manipulonyx grip slippery eggshells. Manipulonyx was about 1’8” long (50cm).
