International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026) in Kenya led by IMPACT_KENYA The International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026) — declared by the United Nations General Assembly — is a historic global initiative that will bring together pastoralist communities from across Africa to celebrate and strengthen their contributions to sustainable development, peace, climate resilience, and cultural heritage (FAO, 2025; IYRP, 2025). Rangelands, which cover a significant portion of the world’s land surface, are vital ecosystems that support biodiversity, store carbon, regulate water, and sustain the livelihoods of millions of pastoralists (FAO, 2025). In Kenya, the year — led by Impact kenya — will convene pastoralist leaders, youth, women, policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders to advance inclusive dialogue and collective action. The programme will focus on enhancing pastoralists’ rights to land and mobility, promoting sustainable rangeland management, and integrating indigenous knowledge into climate adaptation strategies. It will also emphasize peacebuilding by fostering cooperation across communities and reducing conflicts over shared resources through customary governance and shared stewardship practices (IYRP, 2025; FAO, 2025). IYRP 2026 summig for recognizing pastoralists as custodians of landscapes and champions of coexistence, while thanking all organizations and individuals working tirelessly for a better pastoral life across the continent. #pastrolism #UNited4Land
