Visiting the Baron’s Hall in Penshurst Place, which is part of the original house and was completed in 1341. This would have been the hub of household life in the medieval and early modern periods #penshurstplace #penshurst #medieval #medievalgreathall #greathall

About the talk: Over Penshurst Place’s 650-year history, each owner has made their mark on the house – and ever since it was presented to the Sidney family by King Edward VI in 1552, each generation has sought to put their own stamp on the house as they seek to further the family’s legacy. As with many historical families, heraldry has been a useful resource to the Sidneys as they have told their family story over the centuries, providing a register of symbols, emblems and devices with which to signal family prestige, celebrate dynastic alliances and mark important occasions – most prominently the pheon (also known as the ‘broad arrow’) and the porcupine. This presentation will explore the heraldic heritage of the Sidney family and how it has left its mark both on the pages of history and the fabric of Penshurst Place itself. It will trace the development of the Sidneys’ symbols, coats of arms and titles alongside the family’s changing fortunes over the past 475 years and the evolution of the house over that time. Philip Sidney is a member of the Board of Management at Penshurst Place. He also serves as a Governor of the Lord Leycester Hospital in Warwick, and is Chair of the Next Generation Committee of Historic Houses. He co-edited Love’s Victory by Lady Mary Wroth with Profs Alison Findlay and Michael Brennan (published in 2021 by Manchester University Press), and is currently co-editing The Complete Poems of Sir Philip Sidney with Prof Michael Brennan for the Longman Annotated English Poets series.
Next lunchtime talk: Monday 12th May, 1-2pm
