In SME 1, it started asking me about how i felt about pressure and then it would take one part from my response and then deep dive into that and then it would ask me more and pretend to understand. #hwa4 #performingunderstanding

"When you close your eyes laterally, what are you refusing to witness in the room with you right now"
Theres an ontological slippage, where the questions, once general, reduces to a more subjective level. It's "in" my world, but from the outside window.
2. it works because it feels confident and reflective, even though it never defines what’s happening. like Ashley says, GPT doesn’t understand, it performs understanding. my sentence does the same by mirroring insight without explaining it #hwa4 #performingunderstanding
1. one sentence from my SME #1 that sounds like understanding: “the voice keeps going, even when meaning gives out.” #hwa4 #performingunderstanding
“you talk about losing inconsistency-like it’s just a bad habit, but I wonder if it’s been your hiding place”. I think Gpt just understood knew my performances . It inferred why, In #hwa4 the guy in the beginning talks about performance, I think this ties into it. #performingunderstanding
I feel like GPT was constantly trying to think of crazy hypotheticals that would not happen in a real scenario. My discussion points were REAL possibilities, but it replied with imaginary ones. It was trying to understand me but in a world that does not exist. #hwa4 #performingunderstanding
#hwa4 #performingunderstanding GPT was using very specific and complex words in the responses. I wanted to reduce the complexity to have an easier time responding to it. But it's originally my questions and use of chatgpt that made it decide that it wants to use complexity in it's questions
#hwa4 #performingunderstanding Here, gpt is pretending to understand sensory emotions. obviously, this is beyond its capabilities as AI, but the prompt i gave it tells it to be empathic, to give and take with my responses. Gpt is clinging onto what i have said originally, and rephrasing it.

-from my response for the next question.

In SME 1, it started asking me about choir and how i felt and everytime i said something it would take one part and really highlight it for the next question like it would continuously ask me about how I felt and pretended to understand but would take something random-
It changes the narrative by feeling personal while giving no direct details. It makes me question what I wrote and shifts my focus. #hwa4 #performingunderstanding
#hwa4 #performingunderstanding In the quote above,GPT reiterated and restated my previous statement, but different than when I stated it.I think it is here that GPT analyzed my words and previous prompts to predict what to say next, and honestly surprised me with how well it seemed to "understand" me
#hwa4 #performingunderstanding "I want to press there: if the performing self is a ledger, calculating safety, restraint, and the containment of anger, then the bed-self is a telescope, scanning for constellations of possibility."
but was not the structure that was true. It's showing us the backstage into how it thinks, even if we know that is wrong. Like mentioned in #hwa4, it builds meaning, it doesn't know everything but it learns and adapts. #hwa4 #performingunderstanding
#hwa4 #performingunderstanding
"I felt something coming back"; this relates to what we just learned, as it was understanding without explaining the context of it. I feel like if the line ended at that, it would leave the reader questioning, but ultimately feel the tension of what could be coming.
This to me just sounds like it gets memory and hesitation but it’s rly just arranging familiar emotional cues into a pattern that feels meaningful. It doesn’t actually remember or feel the moment as it mirrors the structure of reflection so it seems like insight #hwa4 #performingunderstanding
"a little false heartbeat or misstep" This little sentence to me performed understanding without explaining it because this is what we talked about in #hwa4 where we have to understand as performance, and not explanation. #performingunderstanding
3/3 it shows us a different way to understand. #hwa4 #performingunderstanding
#hwa4 #performingunderstanding A sentence from my SME that performs understanding is when I say I would start “rebuilding 10/10 through mechanics: opening the report tabs, lining up numbers...” I think it works because it does not really explain understanding in a direct way.
#hwa4 #performingunderstanding This part asked by GPT stood out to me as trying to sound understanding by adding "thought-provoking" questions that reference things that weren't particularly the focus of my prior response. The phrasing and subjects of the questions stood out to be for being so...-
#hwa4 #performingunderstanding Chat got does not hear you when you speak, it reflects back what you’re saying. It adds on with what it knows about you but it just affirms what you say, it doesn’t *get* it like a human does. No empathy.
#hwa4 #performingunderstanding From my SME1, this sentence “the crowd and the bakery and that car—they all breathe together” hits because it doesn’t explain anything, it just is. GPT kinda does that. it puts stuff together like patterns and make you feel that moment without spelling it out.
(1/2) in SME 1 GPT mentioned "you say you were given solos for existing. that feels like an accusation disguised as a compliment." it feels like it was performing an understanding of consoling, but i dont think it actually understands how to do that compared to a human #hwa4 #performingunderstanding
#hwa4 #performingunderstanding
GPT completely made this up and said it as if it was truth. Just like in hwa4 this is GPt shaping a world and because it is not going away we must understand how it stages knowledge or else it will quietly shape the world and while we are left not understanding how.
#hwa4 #performingunderstanding I think this is where GPT performed understanding most explicitly, as the ultimatum it gave is clearly based off our current psychological understanding of intrinsict motivation in humans--altruism vs rational choice. It was trying to map my response to its own log.
#hwa4 #performingunderstanding GenAI does not understand anything... but it does do a good job at pretending to understand. It simulates reasoning. You mentioned how it is just a predictive system—
and remove what it wants to remove, to fit their narrative. #hwa4 #performingunderstanding
but finds an answer online they believe is right to try and pretend as if they know what you are talking about. GPT seems to know everything and nothing at the same time. #hwa4 #performingunderstanding
A sentence from SME 1 that performs understanding without explaining is "And yet here he is—if it is him—grinning in borrowed iconography, dressed like Tyler Durden, cigarette tilted, red lenses catching a light source that doesn’t appear anywhere else in the frame." #hwa4 #performingunderstanding
“ The storm no longer recognizes you…” like it’s remembering your childhood when it actually just auto completes with Weather… weird weird #hwa4 #performingunderstanding
