#Osimertinib was originally developed to overcome resistance to earlier treatment versions, when resistance to it often begins with a small population of #PersisterCells. The study aimed to uncover signaling changes underlying how these cells survive, and to identify new therapeutic targets.
This discovery marks a step forward in the fight against resistance to cancer treatment. By targeting #PersisterCells, the likelihood of relapse could be reduced, thus improving patient prognosis.

Specifically, the study reveals that #PersisterCells block the genes responsible for #inflammation through an epigenetic mechanism that acts as a 'molecular lock,' preventing these genes from becoming activated and alerting the immune system.
A team led by Dr. Manuel Serrano at @irbbarcelona.org has discovered a key strategy through which these #PersisterCells evade the immune response and resist #CancerTreatments.
