#PeterStuyvesant became governor of #NieuwAmsterdam on this day in 1647; its last Dutch leader, he would surrender to the British 17 years later. Stuyvesant tried to keep Portuguese Jewish refugees out of the colony but was overruled by the Dutch West Indies Company:
