FLOOR MOSAIC IN THE HALL OF ARION, 320-350 CE, DETAIL. VILLA DEL CASALE, PIAZZA ARMERINA In a large apsidal hall of the Villa del Casale in central Sicily, the floor is covered with a seascape populated with marine wildlife and mythical figures, like the two characters in this detail. At the centre of the mosaic is the legendary musician Arion, who was mistreated by pirates and escaped on the back of a dolphin; this is a marine concert that metaphorically shows how culture can overcome wild nature. A matching floor mosaic in another hall shows Orpheus playing a concert for the beasts of the forest, so the two mosaics are making the same point. Here an Eros is holding up a sort of couch on which a nude Nereid is perched, lightly dressed with drapery over her thighs, but she did not neglect to put on a crown and plenty of jewellery. Priorities! She's accompanied by a triton carrying a large kantharos on his shoulders. At lower right is a sea leopard, another reference to Bacchus.

DETAIL OF FLOOR MOSAIC, C. 320-350 CE. HALL OF THE SMALL HUNT, VILLA DEL CASALE, PIAZZA ARMERINA In contrast to the long rectangular mosaic of the Great Hunt, which shows exotic animals being captured and hauled off by ship to Rome for use in the Colosseum, the mosaic of the Small Hunt describes hunting in the woods around the Villa itself, in twelve scenes arranged in four registers. This scene is at the right-hand end of the third register, next to a banquet scene. It shows, against a white background, a man in rich clothing of the C4 on horseback, moving to the right, but both horse and rider are looking back at a large rabbit trying to hide in a thicket at the base of a tree. This is to no avail as the hunter is raising his weapon, a peculiar two-pronged spear called a venabulum, which seems designed to trap the animal rather than kill it immediately. As in all the Villa's mosaics, shadows are indicated as black skis that look strange to us but which were a familiar convention in the C3-C4.

GEOMETRIC FLOOR MOSAIC, C. 300-325 CE. VILLA DEL CASALE, PIAZZA ARMERINA In the series of rooms off the northern end of the villa's peristyle, flanking the great hunt mosaic on both sides, a "northern padronal apartment" has been identified. This was a sort of grand suite of rooms and bedrooms suitable for residence by the master of the villa. This specific room has a floor mosaic with a particularly complex geometric pattern, really a series of round and curved octagonal frames made of an entwined guilloche, all on a white background and each frame containing a different geometric or floral decoration. The dominant colours are black and shades of red and orange. For all its complexity, it's not considered a room for the use of the master of the villa, but a service room or an office.

CHILDREN HUNTING, C. 300-325 СЕ. VILLA DEL CASALE, PIAZZA ARMERINA This magnificent late-antique villa was owned by an unknown but rich senatorial entrepreneur who trafficked in wild animals, his hunters trapping exotic beasts and bringing them to Rome for use in the Colosseum. In this detail of the mosaic floor of the antechamber to a bedroom, we have the same hunting theme that characterises many of the villa's other mosaics, but here transformed into something more innocuous, children hunting birds and small animals. On the top register the kids are all right, chasing a large rabbit at left and a partridge at right, but on the register below things aren't going so well - at left a boy in a dark tunic, actually the floor's central figure, is raising his hands iin dismay. Out of shot at left, a rat is biting his would-be hunter's heel, while at left a boy is being chased by an intimidatingly huge cock.
